Owners of gas powered leaf blows (GPLBs) should prepare to retire the tool and opt for the basics; the town is banning their use permanently in Arlington beginning Sunday, March 15.
This new law may come at no surprise to community members, since the ban started as a gradual phase-out, approved in the 2022 Town Meeting.
Many raise concerns regarding the use of GPLBs due to their harmful noise levels and negative impact on the environment. In 2023, the town announced seasonal bans on GPLBs, followed by a permanent ban on their use by commercial operators in 2025. This final phase now applies to all operators, including private residents.
The classic lawn clean-up options of rakes and brooms will be encouraged throughout town, however, residents will be allowed to use electric/ battery powered leaf blowers in moderation; Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. over the weekends, and on holidays.
