YourArlington was started by veteran journalist Bob Sprague in 2006 as an experiment in community journalism dedicated to reporting news about Arlington, Massachusetts, and the town-related views of its residents. That experiment continues, but is not unique – it is part of a growing nationwide movement once called citizen journalism. This hyperlocal news site has published more than 23,000 articles and covered countless meetings and events. It is one of the long-running hyperlocal news sites in New England.
On Dec. 8, 2021, YourArlington announced that it had become a nonprofit organization, recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) and eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions. Accordingly, YourArlington encourages public support through individual donations, sponsorships, underwriting, and grants. YourArlington controls what it publishes and remains independent of those providing donations.
Sprague, an Arlington resident since 1989, served as the site’s editor until July 1, 2023, when an editor was hired, and the site has since expanded its staff. That expansion continued with the redesign of this site, which was completed in 2025.
The site is a member of LION Publishers, which stands for Local Independent Online News Publishers; INN, the Institute for Nonprofit News; and BINJ, Boston Institute for Nonprofit Journalism. It is a member of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce. The site’s primary media partner is ACMi (Arlington Community Media, Inc.), and, in 2025, YourArlington began collaborating with area hyperlocal, independent sites. It also participates in the BU Newsroom, a local journalism program through Boston University.
YourArlington encourages factual reporting, honest opinion, and overall fair play. YourArlington believes that the public has a right to know the sources of information. Anonymous sources may be used by writers in rare cases, but when readers submit content to this site, the reading public should know their full names.
