UPDATED May 6: Arlington pulled a heavy load for a heavy cause. Saturday, May 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the local American Cancer Society division was the host for “Pulling for Hope,” a fund-raising event where volunteers compete to pull a fully loaded fire truck 50 feet.
The teams attempted to pull the heavy vehicle in the shortest amount of time. Registration cost $25 per person.

Those not participating in the pull were able to attend as spectators. At this year’s event, there was a raffle for tickets to a Boston Red Sox games. Attendees can enjoy food grilled by members of the the Arlington Fire Department, along with ice cream courtesy of Belmont’s Moozy’s. There was also kids’ face-painting, lawn games and live music.
This is the sixth year Arlington has hosted this event. In previous years, the benefit has raised $40,000 for the American Cancer Society. “Pulling for Hope” is in honor and remembrance of Arlington’s Firefighters’ deputy chief, Steve Porciello, who died in 2017 from occupational cancer.
