UPDATED Sept. 30: Twenty-seven Arlington residents plan to participate in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk on Sunday, Oct. 6.
Lenora McKenna, Angel Cronin, Charles Lovett, Raul Nieves Jr., Arpi Parseghian, Peggy Fichera, Cynthia O’Brien, Erik Hett, Patrick Cronin, Cathy Dove and 17 other town residents, along with thousands of other walkers, are participating in the annual event aimed at uniting the community to raise funds to support all forms of adult and pediatric care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
The Jimmy Fund Walk, presented this fall by Hyundai, has raised more than $176 million for Dana-Farber in the walk’s 35-year history, raising a record-breaking $9.4 million in 2023.
Resident aims to raise $120,000
Involved is Arlington resident Ellen Eisner, who is captain of B.E. the Team. She told YourArlington that, including its fund-raising to date this year, the team has raised nearly $112,000. “I am hoping we make it to $120,000,” she wrote. On her team is Barbara Wagner, an Arlington resident, close friend and a two-time cancer survivor.
To register for the walk (#JimmyFundWalk) or to support a walker, visit www.JimmyFundWalk.org or call 866-531-9255.
Registrants can enter the promo code NEWS for $5 off the registration fee. All registered walkers will receive a bib, medal and Jimmy Fund Walk T-shirt.
Caitlin Fink, assistant vice president of event fund-raising, said in a news release: “For 35 years, the Jimmy Fund Walk has continuously supported lifesaving research and cancer care at Dana-Farber. Our goal is to build off of the momentum we’ve established throughout that history, and in 2024, aim to surpass our total from last year by raising $9.5 million. Fighting cancer is what we do. The walk unites our community under a common goal — to defy cancer together.”
One walk, 4 distances, for all cancers
The Jimmy Fund Walk is the only organized walk permitted to use the famed Boston Marathon® course, and participants have the flexibility to choose from four distance options: 5K walk (from Dana-Farber’s Longwood Medical Campus); 10K walk (from Newton); Half Marathon walk (from Wellesley); and Marathon walk (from Hopkinton). Walkers also can participate virtually.
Whatever route participants choose, supporting them will be hundreds of volunteers at refueling stations with refreshments throughout the course. Poster-sized photographs of patients — Jimmy Fund Walk Heroes — appear along the course as inspiration.
All routes conclude at the walk finish line powered by Schneider Electric at Boston Common, at Charles and Beacon. Finish-line activities include a celebration with food and entertainment.
Astound Broadband to deliver frozen treats
Astound Broadband, with an office Arlington, a provider of internet, mobile and TV services, continues its role as a sponsor for the walk. Having supported the event since 2015, Astound will again participate this year.
The Astound ice cream truck will serve frozen treats to walkers and participate in Jimmy Fund Walk Spirit Week by giving out ice cream to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute employees Oct. 2.
“Our involvement in the Jimmy Fund Walk allows us to give back to the communities we serve while supporting critical cancer research and care,” said Sanford Ames, senior vice president and general manager of Astound. “We’re committed to being a positive and active presence in our local neighborhoods, and events like these reflect that commitment.”
