A 32-year-old Somerville driver was issued a failure-to-yield citation following a collision between a car and bicycle at Mill and Summer streets at 3:04 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6.
The cyclist, a 71-year-old Winchester man, was taken to Lahey Hospital, where a doctor said at 4:45 p.m. that his condition was stable and his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
A police report offers the following account:
On arriving at the scene, police saw a car facing west on Summer with a broken windshield and the cyclist partially under the passengers side of the vehicle. One officer aided the cyclist, and another began doing hand traffic until other units arrived.
Police spoke briefly to the cyclist, who could not remember any of the events or circumstances that led to the crash, but was wearing a helmet.
He was able to provide all of his personal information and was then transported to Lahey Burlington.
Armstrong Paramedics said the cyclist may have a concussion, which may be causing the memory loss.
Police spoke to the car’s driver, who said he was traveling north on Mill. When he got to Summer, he said he had his left directional on and that when he proceeded through the intersection, he saw a bicycle coming down Cutter Hill Road.
He told police he thought the cyclist had signaled to turn left onto Summer. When the driver began making his turn, the cyclist struck the passengers side of his vehicle, causing the cyclist to strike the windshield then roll off the car.
He said he immediately stopped and checked on the cyclist.
Police spoke to several bystanders who said they heard the crash and did not see it.
Because the cyclist would have the right of way while traveling straight through the intersection, police issued a citation.
Because of the damage to the windshield, Mal’s Towing responded to remove the vehicle.
