The following is based on selected Arlington Police Department logs from March 18 through March 22.
Excerpts from the Arlington Police Department log:
Wednesday, March 18
8:17 a.m. Breaking and Entering. Officers responded to a report of a breaking and entering of a motor vehicle on Piedmont Street. The reporting party stated that his vehicle, which was registered in his wife’s name, had a slightly ajar driver’s side door. Additionally, the steering column and the ignition system, had been tampered with and damaged. The vehicle was parked in the driveway since 5 p.m. the day before. The doors remained unlocked through the night, but the keys were not in the vehicle. Another vehicle in that area also appeared to have been entered, but it could not be observed at the time. After looking for video footage at several residences on Piedmont, a large pickup truck was observed traveling westbound on Piedmont at midnight. At 1 a.m., a white SUV was seen traveling on Piedmont, as well as a white sedan at 4:53 in the morning. The matter is under investigation.
Friday, March 20
12:08 a.m. Larceny. A station officer spoke with an individual who stated she mailed a check on March 6 or March 7, but when checking her account, she discovered that her check had been cashed for a new amount. The check was altered and made out to a new recipient in the amount of $6,482. The funds were removed from her account. Afterwards, she notified the bank of a fraudulent transaction and then filed a report.
6:57 p.m. Assault and Battery. An unarmed robbery and past assault and battery were investigated by officers on Gardner Street. Officers found the apartment owner, who asked to remain anonymous, yelling in the apartment. After entering the apartment, officers found the apartment owner lying in the doorway between the living room and the kitchen. She was breathing and conscious with cuts and dried blood on her face, indicating the incident had happened hours before the officers’ arrival. She stated she had a friend who was homeless come by and stay the night. That party also brought her boyfriend to stay overnight as well, but the apartment owner did not know who this man was. The apartment owner put $600 in her pocket in front of that party and her boyfriend.
A few hours later, the party and her boyfriend jumped her, taking her money and cellphone. She was medically evaluated by fire rescue, but could not recall the party’s phone number. She described the party as a 70-year-old black female who occasionally came to stay in town, hanging around Central Square. She described the boyfriend as a light-skinned Black man in his 30s or 40s. She had no name or clothing description for either party, or a name for the male party. She was transferred by Arlington Fire Rescue to a hospital in Burlington. Photos of the apartment were taken. Charges cannot be made because the male party cannot be identified at this time, and no information can be found on the female party. The detective bureau is still looking into this matter.
Saturday, March 21
12:43 p.m. Found Property. On Mass. Avenue, a station officer was given a blank envelope by a UPS driver. The carrier stated he was instructed to drop the envelope off at the station. Once opened, it contained a wallet with credit cards and three Massachusetts licenses. The officer contacted the post office to speak to the supervisor. The supervisor stated that the letter carrier had turned in these items after locating them in a mailbox on Mass. Avenue. The officer was able to locate the phone number of the wallet’s owner. The officer spoke to the owner and discovered he was a truck driver who must have dropped it along his work route. The wallet was placed in the front storage container at the police station to be retrieved. The officer was unable to make contact with the owner of the other items.
Sunday March 22
9:23 p.m. Hit and Run. Officers were dispatched to Dudley Street for a hit-and-run motor vehicle crash. She heard a crash and then witnessed a Blue Toyota Tacoma travelling westbound on Massachusetts Avenue, turning left on Appleton Street. The victim reported that her 2013 Black Toyota Camry was parked in front of Ginger Express on 1181 Mass. Ave. Once officers arrived, they discovered scrapes on the driver’s side door of the Camry. She followed the vehicle until the Tacoma operator stopped at Park Circle. While stopped at a red light at an intersection, the operator of the Tacoma saw high beams in his passenger mirror, assuming it was a police officer, but it was a woman telling him he had just struck her vehicle.
He said that he did not believe he had struck anything because of the rain and fog, but he allowed her to take a picture of his license plate if that would make her happy. She believed the male operator of the Tacoma to be intoxicated from how he was talking. She began to take a video of the Tacoma before getting back into her vehicle and heading westbound on the Concord Turnpike. The victim stated she had a headache from the stress of the incident, but did not endure any injuries from the incident. The Tacoma operator stated he was leaving his business on Mass. Avenue, turning left onto Appleton, then heading up to Park Circle to head home to Concord. Due to the extent of damage of the Camry, it is likely he was not aware of his Tacoma’s collision with the Camry. The Tacoma operator will be mailed a citation for leaving the scene of property damage.
