For a 26-year-old Fall River woman, Friday the 13th was the day her luck ran out.
Arlington police say, Sheena Moss was trying to “scam” an Arlington man out of $500, and perhaps much more than that earlier. Police charged her with an attempt to commit a crime.
Called March 13 at 2:12 p.m., police responded to a Lake Street address to investigate a possible breaking-and-entering in progress. A police report provides this narrative:
While police were en route, dispatch said the reporting party could see the home owner being escorted to a vehicle.
On arrival, officers found the car involved in the driveway occupied by four people. All were ordered out of the vehicle except for one person who was believed to be the target of fraud.
The car’s driver said he had just given his friend, Moss, a ride to see a friend and get some money. The driver said he did not know the target and was just providing him with a ride to the bank to get the money for Moss.
One of the passengers said he came along for the ride and was friends with Moss.
Police spoke to Moss, who said she came to get money from the Arlington man for a new car she was renting for him. Moss stated that last year she had totaled the man’s vehicle, and that was why she was renting the car for him. Moss said she and her friends were going to give him a ride to the bank to withdraw $500 to pay her sister to rent the vehicle, which was at her house in Fall River. Moss said the vehicle was a 2013 Volvo Cross Country and that the man frequently gives her money if she asks for it and she hasn’t paid him back.
Police then spoke to the Arlington man, who said Moss told him that for $500 she could get him a new vehicle to replace the one she had totaled. He said he was told the money was to release the vehicle from the tow yard where it was currently stored.
He said that when the police arrived, he was on his way to the bank with them to get the $500. He said he was going to give the money to Moss and that she would return later that day with the vehicle for him to keep. He said Moss has received money from him in the past and he never received any of it back.
The man told police something else: Moss has also stolen money from him in the past.
Police spoke to the man’s son, who said he believed Moss was trying to “scam” his father and believed that there was another police report for the same type of scam about two months ago. The son told police: “There is no way you can buy a 2013 Volvo for $500.”
The son said that over the past year Moss has lived with his father off and on and during that time has scammed the dad out of about $20,000. The son said some of the incidents had been reported to Arlington police, one to Cambridge police and at other times it went unreported.
With the information reported to police, the son said he was he was going to try and get power of attorney over his father’s affairs and also would look into obtaining a restraining order.
Moss was cuffed, searched and placed in the rear of Car 352. Moss was transported to the station by this Officer followed by Sgt. Krepelka.
Upon arrival at the station Moss was booked by Sgt. Krepelka and charged with one count of M.G.L. 274/6 Attempt to Commit Crime (Larceny by False Pretense).
As a result of an incident on Jan. 14, 2015, police sought a charge of larceny by false pretense against Moss.
The police report concludes: ‘T should also be noted that, according to KellyBlueBook.com, a 2013 Volvo Cross Country XC70 in good condition is valued at $26,900.”
