’76 Days’: Documentary screened Thursday, Jan. 23, at Regent Theatre.
The documentary “Adrift: Seventy-six Days Lost at Sea” screened at the Regent Theatre, followed by a question-and-answer session with the film’s executive producer Robert Sennott. The showing was held Thursday, Jan 23, at 7:30 p.m.
The film documents the story of Steven Callahan, an experienced sailor, who spent 76 days trying to survive in the Atlantic after his small ship, Napolean Solo, hit a whale and capsized seven days after departing Newport, RI, in 1982. The film is based on Callahan’s 1986 memoir of the same name.
Sennott has known Callahan since their time on the track team at Dover-Sherborn High School. It is directed by Joe Wein and famed film director Ang Lee (“Life of Pi” and “Brokeback Mountain”) served as executive producer. Film Threat said of “76 Days”: “The film is a gem of a ripping tale and a great example of human persistence in extreme circumstances.”
In the press materials for the documentary, Wein, the director, said: “I think what drew me most to Steven Callahan’s story, and what I hope resonates with audiences, is the way he handled himself in such a dire situation. He focused on what he could do, on what he had rather than what he lacked. That mindset, that ability to stay resourceful and present, is what ultimately carried him through. This is a story about survival, but it’s also about isolation, ingenuity, and the strength we find within ourselves in moments of absolute despair.”
