The EALS petition is intended to push town officials to make Mass. Ave. safer and more accessible for everyone, no matter their transportation mode. The town must provide a mix of “quick-build” improvements – e.g., flashing beacons or median islands at unsignalized crosswalks, elimination of gaps in the bike lane network — while continuing to focus on longer-term reconstruction projects in Arlington Center and at the Mass. Ave./Appleton intersection.
The petition includes four principles:
- Improved crosswalks,
- Continuous bike lanes,
- More reliable bus service, and
- Better parking management—intended to inform the implementation of some safety enhancements in the next 18 months, with others in 2024 and beyond.
