State Rep. Dave Rogers has nominated Kimberly Haley-Jackson, a constituent from Belmont, for the 2022 Black Excellence on the Hill Award. which recognizes leaders from across the state who are making a positive impact in their communities.
He joined with House colleagues from the Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus to celebrate the award, which recognizes leaders from across the state who are making a positive impact in their communities.
“I am happy to have the opportunity to honor her incredible work in the Town of Belmont,” said Rogers, chair of the Committee on Higher Education, in a March 17 news release.
As vice chair of the Belmont Human Rights Commission, chair of the Diversity Task Force and a Town Meeting member, Haley-Jacksony has been committed to Belmont in a variety of ways.
In particular, she has been instrumental in increasing the visibility of the Human Rights Commission, through working with schools and teachers to ensure students of color in Belmont have the proper access to the tools needed to succeed. As a mother of three Belmont students, she has firsthand knowledge of the challenges students of color experience in Belmont and has been determined to increase support in those areas of need.
In the release, Kimberly says, “Although we have a long way to go, strides have been made towards recognizing the voices of BIPOC and LGBTQ citizens who at times have been ignored within Belmont. Within the community, I have helped to institute Black and Brown in Belmont, an affinity group to uplift our BIPOC population, and Belmont for Racial Healing, an ongoing workshop with the Belmont Religious Council to address racial divisions and self-reflection on racial bias.”
Her efforts have created more awareness, increased community volunteering and outreach in Belmont. She has exemplified the qualities of someone who is much deserving of the 2022 Black Excellence on the Hill Award. Kimberly’s incredible work in the community has made Belmont a better place, Rogers said.
