In addition, each participating nonprofit organization shares in the overall proceeds from the race.
Two years ago
Two years ago, in addition to donating $700 to the Minuteman Futures Foundation, the Battlegreen Run Foundation funded a $1,000 scholarship in memory of Pauline Briggs, who lived in Lexington and taught biotechnology at Minuteman from September 2000 until she died in July 2004.
“There are so many volunteer opportunities requiring the expertise of our students,” Ham said, “that it makes it a very rewarding and satisfying experience. Students are able to shine in areas they are passionate in and help fund-raise for long-standing worthy charitable organizations including Minuteman.”
For example, Minuteman’s Community Service and Learning/Interact Club volunteers at the water tables and helps direct runners. Culinary Arts and Hospitality students and teachers have prepared and served the signature dish in the Minuteman tent for the past two years to more than 800 runners and walkers. Health-assisting students have staffed the medical tent. Design and visual communication students participated in a logo contest. Melanie Hennessey of Dover, a member of the Class of 2018, created the winning design.
“The Battlegreen Run has changed their marketing image as a direct result of Melanie’s work,” Ham said. “Our students have also designed lawn signs and worked with the Minuteman Parent Association to design a poster to internally share our fund-raising efforts.”
Nov. 5 run
The school had a significant presence at last year’s Genesis Battlegreen Run, on Nov. 5. Minuteman culinary-arts teachers and students staffed the signature food both for a second year in a row; people from health assisting volunteered at the first-aid station; Minuteman’s Community Service and Learning/Interact Club volunteered; design and visual communications students helped with promotional materials; and the school had runners representing its student body, the Minuteman Parent Association and staff.
Minuteman also increased the number of individuals taking part as runners and walkers. In 2016, there were six staff members running in the 10K and 5K events. In 2017, there were more than 10 walkers and runners.
Anita Currier, a culinary arts/hospitality instructor, said that fellow instructor Martin McElhinney and she believe is important to participate in the Battlegreen Run to bolster Minuteman’s involvement in the community.
“This was the second year that we attended and feel our efforts and presence were greatly appreciated by the organization,” she said. “The student volunteers enjoyed the experience and the event provided a meaningful example of community service. We are happy to know that our efforts facilitated a substantial contribution from the Battlegreen Run to the Minuteman Futures Foundation and the Minuteman Parent Association.”
