Winners in town highlight scholastic standouts
The Boston Sunday Globe has published photos and briefs capsulizing what was best this winter in Massachusetts high schools sports, and Arlington names are prominent.
Among the players of the year in school hockey is Mic Curran of Arlington High, and among the top coaches is John Messuri. Both helped lead AHS to a state title.
Among “10 moments to remember from high school sports this winter,” Arlington rates No. 4: “Arlington goes overtime for a Super 8 finale”:
“The road to the Super 8 title for coach John Messuri and his Arlington High boys’ hockey team? A collective effort from start to finish.
“Messuri, a Spy Ponder to the core who skated for legendary Eddie Burns [1947-1997], lauded a’great group of assistants coaches’ and a ‘strong nucleus of seniors.’
“Junior goalie Jack Pinard stole Game 1 of the Super 8. Senior Peter Scheschareg dominated the second game with a hat trick. Classmate Kevin Ouellette potted a double-overtime winner against defending champion Malden Catholic in the semis. And then 15 seconds into overtime of the final, a tick past 10:30 p.m. at TD Garden, senior Mic Curran converted a wraparound, lifting Arlington (22-2-2) to a thrilling 2-1 win over Central Catholic. The Ponders are just the third public program to raise the 1A trophy to the roof.”
The School Committee publicly honored the team.
Boys’ hockey player of the year

Mic Curran, Arlington, senior
Curran led the Super 8 champions with 51 points and was named a Middlesex League All-Star. The hard-nosed center potted both goals for the Spy Ponders in their overtime win over Central Catholic in the state title game.
Boys’ all-scholastics (among 16)
Jack Pinard, Arlington, junior
Pinard led the Middlesex League-champion Spy Ponders to the Super 8 title, allowing just 21 goals in 21 games. In Super 8 tournament action, the junior goalie let in four goals in four games en route to the title.
Boys’ hockey coach of the year

Division 1A: John Messuri, Arlington
Messuri’s accomplishments started at Arlington and continued at Princeton University, where he became the school’s all-time leading scorer. He credited this season’s Super 8 success to his assistant coaches and senior class.

Colin McNamara, Arlington, senior
McNamara was the Middlesex League MVP after averaging 19 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals per game in 2016-17. The senior guard leaves Arlington as the winningest player in school history at 78-18. He’ll attend WPI.
