UPDATED, Nov. 20: The Arlington High School girls’ soccer team (16-3-3) took the MIAA’s Division 2 North championship Monday, Nov. 14, beating Danvers, 3-0. But the team could not get past Hingham and Eve Hewins — again.

The senior forward scored the golden goal in sudden-death overtime, as Hingham won, 2-1, for its third straight Division 2 Eastern Mass. state title. Hewins also kicked the winner in 2014.
The Ponders played their best Saturday, Nov. 19, at Manning Field in Lynn, before bleachers packed with students bused from AHS.. In the photo Mackenzie Sherriff, an AHS senior, scores the game’s first goal off a corner kick seven minutes before halftime. Assisted her was senior Anna Kohlberg.

The Division. 2 North championship was the second in the last three years for the AHS girls. Arlington lost to Hingham, 3-2, score in the 2014 state championship game.
Hingham, ranked No. 1 in the South Division, sports a 20-0-1 record, outscoring three postseason opponents by 18-4.
Arlington beat No. 6 Marblehead (14-4-1) after the half in the semifinals Friday, Nov. 11, at Woburn. The score was 3-2 in overtime.
Morris scored the winner in the final minute of OT help the seventh-seeded Spy Ponders advance to the finals in Lynn. Danvers had topped Belmont, 2-0, last Friday afternoon.
Senior Anna Kohlberg scored the game’s only goal as the Spy Ponders advanced to the semifinals Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Peirce Field. The girls’ soccer team, ranked No. 7, edged No. 18 Concord-Carlisle (6-8-2).
After a successful season, the team faces play in a single-elimination bracket. Losing one game will knock them out until next fall.
Oct. 25 was senior night, and the AHS team had defeated Lexington, 2-1, in the last regular-season game of the year. After their victory, the seniors on the team were honored for their commitment to the team and the efforts they’ve made to make this team so successful.
A bittersweet moment
It was a bittersweet moment for most of the team. The seniors are proud of the team’s success and sad to leave something they have been apart of for so long.
One of these seniors was Mackenzie Sherriff, a striker, who has played on varsity since her sophomore year and junior varsity her freshman year. She described her senior year as one of the most significant, because it’s her last year playing and she “has to show leadership being the oldest on the team.”
On the team for so long, Sherriff has seen many new players and has had to adapt to a fairly new team every year. She said that “it takes some time to figure out each others’ strengths and weaknesses on the field. However, each year the team is always like a second family to me and I love playing with everyone on the team.”

No. 1 Winchester edges AHS boys on penalty kick
The Ponders crushed No. 10. East Boston (10-3-4) in the first round Nov. 5, Pierce Field, 7-0. Concord-Carlisle trounced No. 2 Snowden (15-2-1), 8-0, Monday, Nov. 7, at Boston English.
The Arlington High School boys’ soccer team, ranked No. 8 in MIAA’s North Division 2, lost to top-seeded Winchester in the quarterfinal Monday, Nov. 7, at Winchester. The scores was 1-0.
Senior Matteo Bianchini scored his 13th goal of the season, connecting on a 60th-minute penalty kick after he was brought down from behind in the box. Junior goalkeeper Justin Polcari, making his first start in five games after dislocating his shoulder, recorded five saves for the Sachems (17-1-1).
AHS had advanced after blanking ninth-ranked Boston Latin School (12-5-1) in the first round Saturday, Nov. 5, at Arlington’s Pierce Field. The score was 2-0, as senior midfielder Tommaso Valagussa and his brother Francesco, a sophomore, each scored for the host Spy Ponders (12-4-3).
Girls win, end undefeated at home
The Arlington High girls’ soccer team edged Winchester, 2-1, on Tuesday, Nov. 1, as seniors Heather Gallagher and Anna Kolbert scored to help the Spy Ponders (12-3-3) polish off undefeated record at home this season.
Dalagussa kicks 9th for Ponders
The Arlington High boys’ soccer team (5-4-2) tied Lexington, 1-1, on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Lexington, as senior Tomasso Dalagussa tallied his ninth goal of the season for the Spy Ponders.
