These residents realize that when our selectmen remove one of the 4 existing corridor travel lanes and narrow 2 of the remaining 3 lanes, traffic congestion will increase. They further realize traffic congestion will become even worse, because our population is growing and the town is also undertaking an aggressive long-range effort to attract many tourists to Arlington.
Selectmen, however, have maintained that traffic congestion will decrease, which would make this corridor the only major roadway in the U.S where lane elimination and lane narrowing have that happy result.
Here’s perhaps another shocker: the 4,334 voters have not faded into the woodwork. The thousands who travel daily on the corridor in motor vehicles like automobiles and transit buses remain aware.
So, too, do the East Arlington residents who know someday the bell may toll for them, at which time they’ll need the fastest possible response from emergency vehicles but won’t get it. I’m sure you’re aware emergency response time data, before and after the travel lanes are eliminated and narrowed, are a matter of public record, as are the transcripts and recordings of 911 calls and other pertinent emergency response time public information.
