The following is based on selected Arlington Police Department logs from Sept. 2 through Sept. 6. Excerpts from the Arlington Police Department log:
Wednesday, Sept. 2
2:27 p.m. Accident. Officers responded to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Appleton Street and Mass. Avenue involving a bicyclist. The bicyclist was found on the ground on his right side wearing dark clothing and a helmet. The cyclist stated he was coming downhill approaching the intersection, but he did not see the vehicle until after he was hit. He required assistance but regained his footing and was transported to a local hospital. The operator of a red 2020 Toyota RAV4 stated he was coming from a parking lot when attempting to go straight onto Appleton. He checked both ways but did not see the cyclist. The operator showed no signs of phone use or intoxication. A witness nearby stated he was traveling eastbound on Mass. Avenue when he saw the cyclist pull in front of her while she slowed down for the yellow flashing light. The cyclist continued before colliding with the Toyota as it merged into traffic. The bike sustained no damage and was brought to the station. The cyclist was taken to the hospital. The vehicle sustained slight damage to the passenger-side bumper, and no airbags deployed. A citation will be mailed for failure to yield to a bicyclist.
Thursday, Sept. 3
2:28 p.m. Motor vehicle damage. The owner of a 2006 gray Cadillac made a report of damage to his motor vehicle on Drake road. He stated he found items on the ground near his vehicle that did not belong to him, and as he was discarding them, he discovered a marking along his passenger side. He stated the marking appeared to be made from a sharp object. He parked his vehicle last night as he usually does, so he does not know when this incident would have taken place. He was given a report number for insurance purposes.
Friday, Sept. 4
6:06 a.m. Accident. A white Volkswagen parked eastbound on Eastern Avenue was involved in a motor vehicle accident with a blue Jeep Renegade. The Jeep was found facing westbound on Eastern Avenue, and both operators were standing on the sidewalk. The Volkswagen operator stated that while she was unloading from her vehicle with her rear driver’s side door open, the Jeep struck her door and continued Avenue. She stated she was traveling for two blocks. The Jeep operator did not come to a full stop until she was at Highland Avenue. She stated she was traveling eastbound and thought she had enough space to pass the Volkswagen but ultimately struck it. The Jeep sustained minor damage to the passenger-side front door, while the Volkswagen’s rear driver-side door was now unable to close, and the driver’s side door was also damaged. A tow service was called for the Volkswagen.
9:29 a.m. Breaking and entering report. Officers arrived on Orvis Road to investigate a past breaking and entering involving missing jewelry. The reporting party stated someone entered her residence the previous day between 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., while she was out. When she returned after 3:30 through the back door, she discovered the front door she always locks was open and that men’s and women’s jewelry was missing from the home. She contacted the upstairs tenant, who had Ring camera footage showing a man exiting the front door around 3:31 p.m. The suspect is described as a 30- to 40-year-old black male wearing a black bald cap, a gray hoodie and sweatpants, and gray/white sneakers. Officers determined he appears to have entered through the back and exited through the front. This matter is under investigation.
Saturday, Sept. 6
7:40 p.m. Building vandalism. A husband and wife called Arlington police about a suspect they had held on Oxford Street for vandalizing a building. The wife directed officers to her husband, who had pinned down the suspect at 102 Oxford St. The reporting parties said they were walking home from dinner and saw new graffiti on the side of the building. They witnessed an individual with a backpack walking away from the business and returning to add more graffiti to the property. The husband approached the individual, who was able to get him on the ground and call 911. The suspect is described as a juvenile from Arlington who had put his personal tag on two buildings. Officers called the kid’s parents to take custody of him, but he will be receiving a criminal complaint for two counts of building vandalism.
