Summer is ending with a sizzle, as Massachusetts enters another stretch of dangerously high temperatures. The state has issued an unhealthy heat advisory in effect from Aug. 5, through Tuesday, Aug. 11.
The town is reminding residents to take all precautions during this period of excessive heat, such as avoiding overexertion, drinking plenty of water, and checking in on family and neighbors.
A recent town announcement listed the public cooling areas in Arlington, including the Arlington Reservoir, North Union Spray Park, a local coffee shop or theater, or the Fox or Robbins library. Residents 60 years and older can visit the Community Center at 27 Maple St to attend Council on Aging programming.
New this summer, and part of the town’s Cool and Connected program, St. John’s Episcopal Church (74 Pleasant St.) now welcomes visitors Tuesdays and Fridays, from 1 to 5 p.m. The Calvary Church (300 Mass Ave.) will welcome visitors on Mondays from 1 to 4 p.m.
Additionally, residents can check out Arlington EATS (117 Broadway) to stay cool on Sunday, Aug. 9 from 1 to 5 p.m.
In addition to relaxing in well air conditioned spaces, the town encouraged the community to reduce electricity usage between 3 p.m. and sunset to lower grid costs and pollution. Residents can view the town’s Electrify Arlington page to learn more about reducing energy emissions.
While the temperatures remain this high, the hot weather can stress Arlington’s trees — specifically trees in their first few years of growth, according to the recent town announcement. Residents are asked to stay on top of filling the green bags at tree bases in their yards, streets or neighborhoods.
