After more than a year of revising and editing, the town has announced that its new Comprehensive Plan (Amp Up!) has been adopted as of May 4, 2026. This news comes just one month after community members were invited to respond to the final draft.
Amp Up!, which will replace the town’s “Master Plan” created back in 2015, is a a long-range policy document that establishes a community’s vision and goals and identifies strategies for achieving them. Under Massachusetts Law, each municipality is required to have a comprehensive plan that helps coordinate decisions across a range of topics, including land use, housing, transportation, economic development, public facilities, open space, natural resources, and implementation.
“A comprehensive plan is one of the most important tools to help align municipal decision-making with community goals,” said Arlington Town Manager, Jim Feeney.
“The AmpUp! Comprehensive Plan reflects the priorities of our residents, businesses, and community organizations and puts forth a shared vision.”
The plan was adopted by the Arlington Redevelopment Board and devised by the The AmpUp! Committee, which consisted of 15 residents; homeowners, renters, local business owners, long-time residents, and newer residents.
In his letter to the community included in the adopted Amp Up! plan, Feeney credited the participation and commitment of community members.
“The depth and diversity of input we received strengthened the planning process and ensured that the plan generally reflects the lived experiences of those who call Arlington home now and those who may call Arlington home in the future,” he wrote.
“As we move from planning to implementation, that same partnership will be essential. We look forward to continuing this work together, building on the ideas, energy, and thoughtful input of the community, to ensure that Arlington remains a welcoming, resilient, and thriving place for all, now and into the future.”
