The Arlington School Committee has announced that two vacancies exist within the town’s Human Rights Commission (AHRC), and the committee is accepting applications to fill them.
One appointment will fulfill a term from June 16 through Oct. 31, 2026. The other appointment begins immediately and ends on Oct. 31, 2027.
The School Committee is prepared to accept applications until the vacancies are filled.
The ARHC, created by a vote in the 1993 Town Meeting, was established to “to advance issues related to
the fair and equitable treatment of individuals, and to create a mechanism for addressing complaints arising out of these issues.”
The School Committee is the appointing authority for five of the thirteen AHRC members. According to the Town Meeting bylaw, appointing authorities for the AHRC are required to publicly solicit Arlington residents prior to making appointments, and to make appointments that are “representative of the diversity of the town.”
No formal experience working in human rights work is required to apply. However, the School Committee will give preference to applicants with a connection to the Arlington Public Schools, experience in PK-12 education, and a commitment to working with the school department in order to achieve the goals of the AHRC.
According to the commission, the time commitment of each AHRC member may vary from month to month, but commissioners can expect to invest approximately six to 12 hours each month, in addition to attending the monthly meeting.
