Though the spring may feel far away, Arlington High School seniors are already preparing for their 2026 graduation. The application period for the John J. Bilafer “Dollars for Scholars” has opened, and students have until March 1 to send in their submissions.
This scholarship has served Arlington students for 43 years. The program was the first town-wide scholarship established in the nation.
Funding is comprised of voluntary contributions from taxpayers, by means of a checkoff box on local tax bills. In its first year, the town collected $3,500 distributed to just six students. Last year, $223,000 was contributed and awarded to more than 100 students.
Arlington residents attending the public high school, Arlington Catholic High School, or Minuteman Tech High School are eligible to apply. This year, more than 100 scholarships are available, including some awards of $20,000 per student. According to a recent town announcement, upwards of $250,000 is to be awarded this year.
