The 77 bus will run more frequently, with service every 15 minutes – or better when needed – starting on Sunday, Dec. 14, according to the MBTA.
With a route that covers nearly the length of Arlington along Mass. Ave., the 77 bus is one of 10 routes that have been designated as “Frequent Bus Routes” to better service the heavy traffic areas every day during most operating hours.
Riders will most notice a change on weekends.
The T also approved the town plan to temporarily move the bus stop for the 77 Harvard Square/Arlington Heights and 350 Alewife Station/North Burlington from 190-200 Mass. Ave. to the turning lane in front of the Capitol Theatre.
For several years, the bus stop was in front of the former bank turned restaurant space on the block at the corner of Mass. Ave. and Lake Street. The temporary move is needed so that the demolition of the existing buildings and the construction of a new apartment building can proceed.
After the MBTA proposed to move the bus stop further east on Mass. Ave. for the several months needed to work at the old site, the Select Board voted to ask the MBTA to move the stop in front of the movie theater. Select Board member John Hurd expressed concern about the original plan, which would have required eliminating parking spaces during the holiday shopping season and into the winter.
