Jean Priscilla (Dallin) Doherty, granddaughter of famous Arlington sculptor Cyrus Edwin Dallin, died peacefully on Aug. 17, 2025. She was 102.
The daughter of Ruth and Bertram Dallin of Arlington, she graduated from Arlington High School in 1942 and attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. She enlisted in the Navy as a WAVE during World War II and later worked at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.
She married William J. Doherty. They lived in Arlington, Somerville, and Bedford, where they raised their four children. They also lived in Manchester-by-the-Sea and Punta Gorda, Fla., where they enjoyed retired life. She was widowed in 1995 and lived independently until she was 100, when she moved into assisted living in Newburyport.
Jean loved to paint and take trips to the ocean. When young, she enjoyed helping her grandfather bring vegetables to Haymarket Square from his Arlington farm. Her favorite summer times were spent at the family home in Acworth, N.H. She had fond memories of family gatherings, her mother’s organ playing at church, and weekly church suppers. Acworth is her resting place.
She is survived by three children and their spouses: Kenneth of Falmouth, Glenn of Newbury, and Sandra of Gloucester; granddaughters Brittany, Ivy, and Jessica; and many great-grandchildren. She also leaves her special friend Phil. She was predeceased by her youngest son, Bryant, her sister Ruth, and her twin sister, June.
A wonderful lady from a past era, her jovial, kind-hearted. and gentle nature will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
A private ceremony will be arranged later. Donations in Jean’s memory may be sent to the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum in Arlington.
