In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which began Oct. 1, Bluebikes has launched a fleet of pink-wrapped bikes. This is the first time the bike ride-sharing system has released this initiative, giving riders the chance to show support for breast cancer patients and survivors.
A total of 100 pink bikes will be available; 50 classic and 50 ebikes. Each ride taken one of them will generate a $1 donation from Blue Cross Blue Shield (the title sponsor of Bluebikes) to The Ellie Fund, a non-profit supporting breast cancer patients in Massachusetts. According to a recent press release, the donations are set to collect up to $10,000.
Once that cap is reached, Lyft, the operator of Bluebikes, will extend the impact by contributing an additional $1 per ride, for up to another $10,000.
Bluebikes has 550 stations in 13 municipalities, including Arlington, Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Newton, Revere, Salem, Somerville and Watertown.
