May is Stroke Awareness Month
According to the CDC, every year more than 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke. About 610,000 of these are first or new strokes.
In May, Arlington’s Fire Department wants you to learn how you can lower your risk of stroke and to recognize the signs and symptoms so you can act F.A.S.T. and call 911.
“It is important to know how to recognize if you or someone else is having a stroke and call 911,” said Capt. Sean Mullane, EMS coordinator for the Arlington Fire Department, in a town news release. “Seconds matter, and emergency medical technicians are trained to assist.”
Think F.A.S.T. to act F.A.S.T. and call 911. The signs to look out for are:
Face droops on one side.
Arm weakness. When the person lifts both arms, one arm drifts down.
Speech difficulty. The person has trouble speaking or is not making sense when speaking.
Time is critical. Call 911 immediately.
