Mark Jaffe, current owner and president of Friend Lumber Co., will retire after the sale is completed, having worked at his family lumber business for more than 47 years. “After three generations of our family operating Friend Lumber, now is the perfect time to find a new steward to bring the company into the future,” said Jaffe. “We couldn’t be more pleased than to be purchased by Arlington Coal & Lumber. The McNamara family has an excellent business reputation and their values align with those of Friend Lumber. Our employees should experience a seamless transition and our customers will receive the same quality service they have known since our humble beginnings.”
The Arlington Coal Co. was founded at 41 Park Ave., as a dealer of coal, lumber, hay, straw, lime and cement. The operation was a coal distributor serving the high demand for coal in the early 20th century. Shipments of coal would arrive by The Boston & Maine Railroad, where the Minuteman Bikeway is now, offloading into large coal shoots.
On May 12, 1923, the corporation name changed to Arlington Coal & Lumber Co. to incorporate the new focus on lumber and building materials. The company services professional home builders, remodeling contractors and retail clients in Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire.
