The Arlington High School chapter of The 84, a group that works to oppose smoking, was awarded a $4,000 grant for the Racial Justice-Black Lives Black Lungs project.
Students will explore the ways in which the tobacco industry targets people of color, Patch has reported.
The chapter will learn about the #BlackLivesBlackLungs project, which highlights the impact of the tobacco industry on the black community.
After the training, the Chapter will organize a conversation about these issues with community peers. The event will include a showing of the #BlackLivesBlackLungs video, followed by discussion.
The 84 is funded by the Department Public Health and represents the 84 percent of Massachusetts youth who did not smoke when the movement began. Now, 93.4 percent of youth do not smoke.
The Arlington High chapter has been working on projects like this since 2014 and has won awards and state recognition for their peer leadership and research.
The students are advised by Karen Koretsky, director of the Arlington Youth Health and Safety Coalition .
