“Thank you again for participating in our 2020 Arlington for All Ages Virtual 5K Race this weekend. The Council on Aging very much appreciates your support, especially during these challenging times.”
This year’s 5K race, an annual fund-raiser benefiting older neighbors in Arlington, asked registrants to make a donation of $30 to the CoA’s capital campaign, which is in place of your runners entry fee, by visiting arlingtoncommunitycenter.org. As of 7:25 a.m. Sept. 7, $125,338 had been raised toward the capital campaign. The goal is $300,000.
There is a spot at the end of the donation form to leave a comment. In this space, please note that the donation is for the Arlington for All Ages 5K Race. This will automatically register you for the virtual race.
Once you register, you will receive detailed information on participating in the virtual race. You’ll be able to run (or walk) any 5K route of your choice on either Saturday, Sept. 5, or Sunday, Sept. 6. Once you complete your run, you’ll be able to report your time to race coordinators who will compile a results list.
You will receive a thank you gift for participating and an invitation to join a virtual race kickoff on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 10 a.m. via Zoom.
As you are likely aware, older adults are our most vulnerable neighbors during this unprecedented pandemic. The Council on Aging has worked quickly and efficiently to meet the needs of adults age 60-plus since the crisis began.
Staff members have instituted virtual exercise programs, virtual support groups, virtual concerts, virtual social programs and virtual activities. The COA established a telephone call reassurance program, began a technology loan library, and distributed hand sewn masks to more than 4,000 residents. The COA joined forces with Arlington EATS to deliver groceries to 250-plus households per week since the pandemic began and made it a priority to work with individuals to accommodate their needs in the safest ways possible.
Amid all of this, the Arlington Senior Center is undergoing its first renovation since the 1980s. This project will deliver a 21st-century facility aimed at meeting the unique and evolving needs of the Arlington community, ultimately transforming the Arlington Senior Center as we know it into the new Arlington Community Center.
