Basketball: A night of losses

UPDATED, Jan. 15: In high school basketball on Tuesday, Jan. 14, all Arlington-connected teams lost.

The Arlington boys fell to 3-6, as Wakefield won, 67-54, at Arlington. Junior guard Brett Okundaye scored a team-high 23 points for the Warriors (6-3).

The AHS girls dropped to 6-3 in a 41-35 loss to Wakefield away.

Bishop Fenwick beat Arlington Catholic boys, 68-55, at Arlington, as Alex Gonzalez led the Crusaders (7-2) with 18 points, while Jason Romans was stellar with 14 points, 11 steals and eight assists.

The AC girls (1-6) lost to Fenwick, 57-35, at Peabody, as junior Annie Murphy (24 points, 12 rebounds) and junior captain Liz Gonzalez (10 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists) led the Crusaders (6-3).

Boston United (1-4, incomplete record) beat Minuteman boys (1-3, incomplete record), 44-34.

AC boys, AHS girls win again

The Arlington Catholic boys’ basketball team improved to 3-2 by edging Cardinal Spellman, 34-33, on Friday, Jan. 10.

The Arlington High School girls topped Belmont, 44-40, Jan. 10 at Belmont, as Ava Connolly (21 points) and Claire Ewen (14 point) led the Spy Ponders (6-2) to the Middlesex victory over the host Marauders (5-3).

The boys’ team dropped to 3-5 as 7-2 Belmont drubbed the Ponders, 76-44.

 AC boys, AHS girls win 

The Arlington Catholic boys’ basketball team prevailed over Archbishop Williams, 54-44, Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Arlington, as senior forward Cam Garber led the Cougars (3-2) with 10 points and 11 boards.

The Arlington High boys’ team fell to 3-4 Jan. 7, as Watertown improved to 3-2 behind a team-high 18 points from senior guard Brennan Cook. The score was 55-42.

The Arlington High girls improved to 5-2, topping Watertown (1-5), 37-32, inn the Middlesex (Liberty).

The Arlington Catholic girls’ basketball team (1-5) fell to the 16th-ranked Bishops (5-2), 74-42, Jan. 7, at Braintree, behind seniors Jess Knight (24 points) and Meg Marcel (12). 

Results of two Minuteman games were not reported to BostonGlobe.com. 

AHS boys win third straight

The Arlington High School boys’ basketball team made it three wins in a row, evening its record at 3-3, with a 63-49 win over Medford (3-3) on Sunday, Jan. 5.

The AHS girls (4-2) were edged by Matignon, 46-44, on Jan. 5, at Cambridge, as senior co-captain Emma Found netted 14 points, her sister, Olivia, had 12, and senior co-captain Olivia Domingos had eight points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors (4-1).

Both AHS teams win

Both Arlington High School basketball teams beat Winchester on Friday, Jan. 3.

The girls improved to 4-1, in a convincing 59-28 victory, as juniors Diana Wicks (14), Clare Flanagan (12) and Ava Connolly (10) all scored in double figures for the Spy Ponders. 

The boys (2-3) edged the Sachems, 41-36, as junior Myles Hess totaled 16 points for the Spy Ponders in the Middlesex League win.

The Arlington Catholic boys’ basketball team (1-2) fell to Cathedral, 55-38.

AHS girls win; AC boys lose, then win

 The Arlington High School girls’ basketball team edged Matignon, 39-38, on Monday, Dec. 30. BostonGlobe.com lists AHS record as 3-1, but a game is missing.

The Arlington Catholic boys lost to Austin Prep, 65-49, Dec. 30 at Winchester, as junior Lance Altenor poured in 31 points in the first-round win in the Winchester Invitational. Mike Gizzi (14 points) had a big second half. Then the AC team bounced back, beating Pioneer Charter, 70-33.

AHS boys win consolation in Framingham tourney

Among holiday tournaments involving boys’ basketball teams, at the Flyer Tournament at Framingham on Saturday, Dec. 28, Arlington lost to Worcester North, 80-75, in the first round, but improved to 1-3 with a 52-44 win over Cathedral on Sunday, Dec. 29, in the consolation game.

The Arlington Catholic girls’ basketball team dropped to 1-3 after a 48-38 loss on Dec. 29 to Austin Prep.

AC boys lose in OT

The Alington Catholic boys’ basketball team lost a heartbreaker Monday, Dec. 23, 62-59, to St. Mary’s in overtime at Lynn.

Joey Abate-Walsh hit consecutive three-pointers during the 15-5 fourth-quarter run to force overtime and finished with a team-high 16 points as the eighth-ranked Spartans (5-0) downed the Cougars. Read the BostonGlobe.com report >>

 The AC girls also fell to St. Mary’s, 75-24, Dec. 23, at Arlington, as junior Maiya Bergdorf led the No. 9 Spartans (5-1) with 19 points.

AHS teams split vs. Lexington

Arlington High School basketball teams split against Lexington on Friday, Dec. 20 — the girls (2-0) prevailed, 48-42, and the boys (0-2) fell in overtime, 71-65. Lexington boys are 2-1.

Arlington Catholic girls’ team has played three games, but BostonGlobe.com has reported no results yet, including the Dec. 20 game against St. Peter-Marian (1-0).

 AHS girls beat Melrose

The Arlington High School girls’ basketball team topped Melrose away on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 43-33, as Claire Ewen, Ava Connolly and Diane Wicks all scored in double figures for the Spy Ponders (1-1).

The AHS boys’ game against Melrose, set for Dec. 17, was postponed and will be rescheduled.

AHS boys lose as rebuilding season opens

The Arlington High School boys’ basketball team fell, 53-38, at home to Woburn on Friday, Dec. 14, in the opener of the 2019-20 season.

After a shaky start, which saw Arlington only score 15 points in the first half, the Ponders worked to get back into the game late. Despite their efforts, Arlington was never able to put a run together, and the Tanners saw out the game comfortably.

Junior Rowan Newton led the Ponders in scoring with nine points, followed by freshmen Marcues Jean-Jacques and junior Henry Burns, who had eight and seven points, respectively.

With only three returning varsity players, including captains senior Phillip Cherrie, Jonathan Kapilian and junior Myles Hess, along with new head coach Jack Woods, this year’s team has a new look both on the court and sidelines.

The Ponders play host to Melrose on Tuesday, Dec. 17, as it seeks its first win of the season.

Sophomore Joe Gattuso totaled 18 points to lead the Tanners (1-0).

The AHS girls’ basketball team also lost to Woburn, 37-34.

The Minuteman High School girls’ team won its opener, 38-27, over Chelsea.

Other scores from Minuteman and Arlington Catholic were unavailable.
