Climate-change forums begin with Lappé as 200 attend

March 14, 2019

UPDATED, March 18: The Arlington Democratic Town Committee and the Social Justice Committee of First Parish Church are sponsoring events about climate change, including a talk by Frances Moore Lappé, of the Small Planet Institute, author of Diet for a Small Planet and  an acclaimed activist for democracy.

An estimated 200 people attended Monday, March 18, at First Parish Unitarian Church, 630 Mass. Ave.

Anne Goodwin, well-known folk singer and Arlington climate activist, will open the program.

This free event is the first of three public forums on climate issues and a wonderful opportunity to learn more about what we can do individually and as a community to combat climate change.

Widely recognized as an inspiring speaker, she offered early work that inspired a revolution in the way Americans eat and how these choices affect the world. Describing herself as a “possibilist,” Lappe´ will address the role of democracy and economic movements in affecting the changes that must happen to cope with climate issues. She will discuss specific programs and ideas for addressing these threats to our world. Energy, infrastructure, taxation policy and food resources are crucial areas of concern.

Citing the Green New Deal and Sunrise Movement as important shifts in how we approach the problem of climate change, Ms. Lappe´ believes we are at a “do-or-die moment” and that a big awakening is needed.

She is looking forward to hearing our questions and concerns in what promises to be a lively and informative event.

Lappe’s books will be available for sale and signing through the Book Rack at the close of the program. The event  will be recorded by ACMi, Arlington’s local cable station.
