Arlington resident Benjamin Evett plays John Adams in the Tony Award-winning musical 1776, playing Nov. 30 through Dec. 30 in the MainStage Theater at the Mosesian Center for the Arts, 321 Arsenal St., Watertown.

1776 tells the story of America’s origin, and in New Rep’s production, co-directors Kelli Edwards and Austin Pendleton, a Broadway veteran, update the classic musical with nontraditional casting.
“We have women playing men, men playing women, and many people of color in key roles. “It was of great importance that this cast be fully representative of today’s America,” says Edwards.
Benjamin returns to New Repertory Theatre after performing in Good, Broken Glass, Assassins, On the Verge, Camelot (2014 IRNE Award, Best Actor in a Musical), Amadeus, Cherry Docs, Opus, Indulgences, A Christmas Carol, Quills, A Girl’s War and Jerusalem, and directing RENT.
He recently won the Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding Solo Performance 2015 for Albatross with The Poets’ Theatre, where he is also executive director.
