UPDATED, Oct, 6: Both Arlington-based high school football teams went down to stinging home defeats — Arlington High to Lexington, 46-21, on Friday, Oct. 5, and Arlington Catholic to St. Mary’s, 28-12, on Saturday, Oct. 6.
The Ponders fell to 1-4, and AC is winless after four.
For Lexington, Anthony Bianchi passed for touchdowns of 10 and 52 yards and added four rushing scores (1, 2, 11, and 7 yards) for the Minutemen (3-2). Peter Roche scored twise for AHS.
For St. Mary’s, Jalen Echevarria was dominant again, rushing for a 48-yard touchdown before hauling in a 27-yard strike from Derek O’Leary as the Spartans (4-1) rolled to Catholic Central Large victory on the road.

Minuteman wins; AHS, AC lose
The Minuteman Mustangs’ football team won its first game of the year behind a senior rusher from Arlington, the Spy Ponders came back, but came up short and Arlington Catholic remained winless after three, all on Friday, Sept. 28.
Seniors Ngor Manyang of Arlington and Darian Cassius combined for 180 yards and three scores to lead the visiting Mustangs (1-3) to the nonleague win against Charlestown, 28-8.
Ryan Gendron, the AHS head coach, reported: “Woburn went up 21-0, and we came back and had to go for it. Arlington went for a two-point conversion to win, and didn’t get it.
AC fell to Bishop Fenwick (3-1), 42-14, at Peabody, as junior David Cifuentes racked up 211 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns for the Crusaders. For the Minuteman game, BostonGlobe.com reported these statistics:

Winchester stays undefeated as Ponders fall
The Arlington High footbal team fell to 1-2, in a 41-15 loss to Winchester (3-0), opening the Liberty Division part of its schedule at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21.
Jimmy Gibbons had touchdown sprints of 62 and 50 yards for the Sachems. Arlington’s Sam Swift returned a blocked point-after 93 yards for 2 points.

Spy Ponders hang in, but tough Stoneham prevails
Playing host to a Stoneham team that went to the Super Bowl last fall, Arlington had its hands full, before losing, 34-21, on Friday, Sept. 14, at home.
AHS head Coach Ryan Gendron provided details for this summary:
During a lively first quarter, quarterback John Bowler threw to Peter Roche for a 68-yard score, and the extra point was good, making it 7-0.
Senior Christos Argyropoulos then ran for a 78-yard score, and a 2-point run failed, for 7-6.
Victor Fernandes scored on a 67-yard pass plus a 2-point run put AHS behind, 14-7.
An extra point after Roche’s 65-yard kick tied it at 14.
In the second quarter, Bowler’s 12-yard run plus Sam Swift’s kick put AHS in the lead, 21-14.
Then Stoneham took over. A 22-yard pass from junior quarterback Deshaun Chase to Argyropoulos made it 21-20 after a kick failed. Chase tossed another, a 30-yarder to junior Michael Picciuto, making it 26-21 Stoneham after a 2-pointer failed.
In the final quarter, a 17-yard running score by Chase plus a 2-pointer by Argyropoulos put the final at 34-21.
AHS wins opener, AC, Minuteman lose
The Arlington High School football team began the season with a bang, blanking Cambridge, 37-0, while Arlington Catholic dropped its opener.
In other games, Arlington Catholic was edged by Shawsheen, 16-14, and Minuteman lost to Greater Lowell, 38-2.
Ryan Gendron, the head football coach, provided these details about the Friday, Sept. 7, away game:
Tyler Callahan had two interceptions, one for a touchdown, to go with 45 rushing yards. Luis Nieves also had two interceptions.
Adam Bowler had nine rushes for 71 yards and two touchdowns. Joe Pazzia had 15 rushes for 66 yards and one TD.

Tough opponent for AC
Arlington Catholic lost its opener Thursday, Sept. 6, to Watertown, 27-18.
The Globe reported that the defending Division 5 North champion Raiders (1-0) got a boost from the athleticism of senior Mange Camara and junior Karim Monroe as they led Watertown to victory, spoiling the debut of Arlington Catholic coach Anthony Petrelis.
Camara scored three times in three ways — an 86-yard kickoff return in the first quarter, a 74-yard run in the second quarter and a 39-yard reception in the third quarter.
Monroe ran Watertown’s first play from scrimmage 64 yards to give the Raiders the 7-0 lead just 22 seconds into the game. The Cougars (0-1) stayed within reach throughout the entire game but were felled by Watertown’s big plays. Senior quarterback Riley Donovan threw two touchdowns and rushed for another.
His 5-yard rush made it 7-6 with 4:30 left in the first, but Camara responded on the ensuing kickoff with his 86-yard TD return. Donovan’s 55-yard strike to senior Steve DiLeo made it 13-12 Watertown with 1:59 left in the first. He also hit junior Joe Greenwood for a 26-yard touchdown pass with 1:53 remaining in the game.
Minuteman loses heartbreaker
Minuteman lost to Matignon/St. Joseph Prep in a 2 p.m. game on Saturday, Sept. 8, in Cambridge
Kenneth Rezendes scored the game’s lone touchdown with 3:31 left in the fourth quarter, a 25-yard charge to the end zone that capped an 85-yard rushing and 10-tackle performance for the senior captain.
Sam Wright had nine tackles, an interception, and 30 yards rushing.
