UPDATED, March 20: Arlington High School runners left their marks on the Nationals, a competition supported by New Balance shoes held in New York City.
Justin Bourassa, an AHS track coach, reported that on Sunday, March 11, Ryan Oosting placed second in the two-mile national championship, with a time of 9:01.87. Oosting holds this year’s fastest national two-mile, at 8:57.59.

Four boys from AHS raced in the distance medley relay on Friday, March 9, with a time of 10:15.23, placing us eighth in the championships. The time was the ninth fastest overall in the country this year.
The quartet ran out of the “slowest” of three heats, but proceeded to beat the entire third heat, the entire second heat and three teams from the first/seeded/championship heat. Here are their splits for their individual legs, with elapsed time as well:
1.) Candell, Jeffrey ’19: 3:16.95 (3:16.95 1200m)
2.) Elyounssi, Adam ’18: 4:07.52 (50.57 400m)
3.) Buckley, Roger ’19: 6:08.42 (2:00.90 800m)
4.) Oosting ’19: 10:15.23 (4:06.81 1600m)
This time qualifies the team for New Balance Nationals Outdoors (spring season National Championships), taking place in Greensboro, N.C., in June.

“I joined the boys, as I coach the distance team on both the girls and boys, and it was an absolute pleasure joining them,” Bourassa wrote Monday, March 12. “We’re incredibly proud of their performance!”
Oosting breaks another 2-mile record
One week after running the nation’s fastest two-mile time (9 minutes, 8.34 seconds) of the high school season, Ryan Oosting returned to the Reggie Lewis Center Saturday, March 3, for an encore performance.
In a display of dominance at the New England Track & Field Championships, the Arlington junior bested his previous mark by more than 10 seconds, clocking a 8:57.59, a personal best and new meet record. For more, read BostonGlobe.com >>
Melissa Dlugolecki, AHS athletics director, called this time a new personal record and a new national mark. He and his team move on to Nationals in New York. On Friday, March 9, the AHS distance medley relay team was to compete — Jeff Candell, 1,200 meters; Adam Elyounssi, 400m; Roger Buckley, 800m; and Oosting, 1,600m. The running sensation stood out at the MIAA Division 2 championship at the Reggie Lewis Center on Feb. 1. He ran first in the mile and two-mile events. His 9:19.41 for the two-mile was the fastest indoor high school time in the nation. He was the only one of to compete in both events, Melissa Dlugolecki, AHS athletics director, reported.

Mile — 1. Ryan Oosting, Arlington, 4:21.41; 2. Nick McNamee, Plymouth North, 4:24.2; 3. Michael Griffin, King Philip, 4:24.24.
Two-mile — 1. Ryan Oosting, Arlington, 9:19.41; 2. John Mariano, Xaverian, 9:34.8; 3. Colby Zarle, Wellesley, 9:36.09.
Oosting sets mile mark at indoor invitational
Ryan Oosting has done it again: The record-breaking runner for Arlington High, second from left in Jan. 13 photo, set a new meet record last weekend at the Indoor Track and Field Coaches Invitational.
He ran the one-mile in 4:14.98, reported Dlugolecki,who wrote: “Equally impressive is when asked, Ryan refrains from mentioning individual achievements but rather focuses on the team’s success and growth. Way to compete and way to lead Ryan!”
Coach Justin Bourassa wrote that besides the junior’s record, and Jeff Candell results in the one-mile. The junior came in 25th, with 4:35.72.

AHS runners on track for Nationals in March
Talk about losing the battle but winning the war: In boys’ indoor track on Saturday, Jan. 13, Central Catholic earned the championship at the MSTCA James Kalperis Division 2 Relays, with 44.5 points.
That topped Arlington. Nonetheless, the Ponders set the distance medley meet record. The relay team not only set a new meet record for all of Division 2; it beat the Division 1 times.
