UPDATED, March 5: With the Super 8 field completed after Monday’s play-in round, Arlington and Wellesley were awarded the top seeds in the MIAA Division 1 North and South boys’ hockey tournaments, respectively, BostonGlobe.com reported. Arlington received a bye into the Division 1 North quarterfinals.
But the 2017 Super 8 champions lost to Belmont on Saturday, March 3, in the quarterfinals at the O’Brien Rink, Woburn.
Sophomore Justin Roche scored with 23.5 seconds left as the Marauders (12-6-4) stunned the top-seeded Spy Ponders (12-5-4) in the quarterfinals at O’Brien Rink in Woburn, their first win over their Middlesex League rival in three tries this season. Arlington had tied the game with 1:53 remaining on Mike Callahan’s goal.
The Marauders took a 1-0 lead with 3:59 left in the first period with a five-hole goal from senior captain Dennis Crowley. Just 10 seconds into the second period, freshman Ben Fici doubled the margin. On a third-period power play, Arlington junior forward Dara Conneely spoiled the shutout bid of senior goalie Kevin Dacey shutout hopes (27 saves). AHS had two goals called back.
The Arlington High School girls’ hockey team, seeded 26th in the MIAA’s Division 1, traveled Duxbury on Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the Bog Arena, Kingston — and lost, 1-0.
Sophomore Grace High converted a rebound with 43 seconds left in the first period as the seventh-seeded Dragons (17-3-2) stopped the Spy Ponders (10-8-3) at the Bog in Kingston.
The Spy Ponder boys’ lost to Pope Francis in the play-in round Monday, Feb. 26, at the Chelmsford Forum, 3-0.
Ben Zaranek made 19 saves for the shutout, and Tyler Wilson, Brendan Nehmer, and Makem Demers all scored to lift the Cardinals (17-3-3) over defending Super 8 champion Arlington at Chelmsford Forum. Melissa Dlugolecki, AHS athletics director, wrote Feb. 24: “This is considered Division 1A, and 10 teams in the state are chosen by a committee — four of which compete in the “play-in” round.
Woburn girls edge AHS
In girls’ hockey, Woburn edged Arlington, 2-1, Friday, Feb. 23, at Woburn, as Marissa Gregory opened the scoring, and Kaitlyn Delaney hit the winner with 2:45 left in the game to lift the No. 2 Tanners (19-0-2).
AHS boys, girls win by same score
The score for both Arlington-based high school hockey teams Thursday, Feb. 22, was 4-0.
The Spy Ponder boys topped Woburn by that score away, as senior captain Jack Pinard posted the shutout in net for the Spy Ponders (12-5-4) with 18 saves.
For the girls, AHS beat Arlington Catholic, 4-0.
AC boys blanked
In boys’ hockey Wednesday, Feb. 21, Duxbury blanked Arlington Catholic, 1-0. AC is 1-6-5 at home and 3-11-7 overall.
Girls’ hockey: Ponders, AC lose
The Arlington High girls’ hockey team, with a winning home record, skated into St. Mary’s on Tuesday, Feb. 20, and lost.
Junior forward Codi Butt scored a pair of goals for the Spartans (15-3-1). BostonGlobe.com reports Arlington is 8-4-2 at home and 8-6-3 overall.
The Arlington Catholic girls fell to Westford/Littleton at Arlington, but the upside is that the team scored three times. The 5-3 loss drops its overall record to 0-19-0.
AHS boys lose; AC ties
As town-based basketball teams came up empty Monday, Feb. 19, boys’ hockey teams did little better.
Andover shut out Arlington, 2-0, as junior Cole Chingris (27 saves) blocked 12 in the third for his sixth shutout of the season for the No. 19 Golden Warriors (11-5-2) in the consolation game of the Ed Burns Classic consolation game. Seniors Matt Belluche and Caeden Dillman scored.
Archbishop Williams and Arlington Catholic played even at 3-3.
AHS boys win, AC teams lose
The Spy Ponder boys’ hockey team shut out Belmont, 2-0, on Saturday, Feb. 17, while the Arlington Catholic boys lost to Reading, 3-0.
In girls’ hockey, Belmont iced, 6-1, and Ursuline topped Arlington Catholic, 4-1, at Arlington. Eighth-graders Abigail Girard and Fiona Power each scored to power the Bears (7-10-1).
AHS teams tie, AC squads lose
Four town-based hockey teams played two ties and two losses Wednesday, Feb. 14.
Both Arlington High School teams tied Winchester — the boys, 3-3, and the girls, 1-1.
St. John’s Prep shut out Arlington Catholic, 6-0, at Danvers. The second-ranked Eagles (11-3-3) connected for a trio of first-period goals at the Essex Sports Center in soaring past AC (3-9-6). Prep’s three leading scorers, sophomore Brian Carrabes, junior Joe Bevere, and sophomore David Sacco, all tallied.
In girls’ hockey, Hingham beat AC, 4-0.
In boys’ hockey Feb. 13, Nashoba Valley Tech beat Minuteman, 7-5.
Boys’ hockey: AC loses to Burlington
The Arlington Catholic boys’ hockey team skated into tough Burlington, losing, 1-0, on Monday, Feb. 12.
Senior forward Sean Casey hit a power-play goal in the third period for the No. 6 Red Devils (15-3). AC is 1-6-4 in the Catholic Central League and 3-8-6 overall.
Boys’ hockey: Malatesta game played to a tie
In a battle of two Super 8 hopefuls, the No. 10 Spy Ponders and No. 3 Hingham skated to a 1-1 tie in the Catherine J. Malatesta Scholarship boys’ hockey game Sunday. Feb. 11.
Jake Higgins scored first, putting the Harbormen ahead in the second period on a power-play strike from the blue line. Arlington junior Tyler Callahan knotted the score midway through the third period on a loose puck in front of the net.
The game was played at Warrior Ice Arena, Brighton.
Boys’ hockey: AHS wins, AC loses
The Arlington High School boys’ hockey team (9-2-1 in the league and 10-4-2 overall) beat Lexington (winless in the league), 4-2, on Friday, Jan. 9.
St. John’s (Shrewsbury) shut out Arlington Catholic, 2-0, at Arlington. Hunter DiGregorio and Brendan Doherty scored and Corey Splaine made nine saves as the visiting Pioneers (10-3-3) blanked the Cougars (3-7-6).
She calls the story “well timed” in the light of the Malatesta game — and “a fitting tribute for Catherine as she played hockey in town for 11 years and took tremendous pride wearing the name of her Arlington community on her jersey.”

AHS girls match Wellesley following boys’ tie
The Arlington High School girls’ hockey team played Wellesley to a 1-1 tie Monday, Feb. 5. BostonGlobe.com reported no further details.
In a face-off of two tough boys’ hockey teams on Sunday, Feb. 4, Arlington High and Marshfield played to a 1-1 tie.
The Ponders are 8-2-1 in the Middlesex League and 9-4-2 overall. The Globe top 20 ranks them No. 10 on Feb. 5.
The South Shore team is 6-1-1 in the Atlantic Coast league and 9-4-6 overall.
AHS rebounds; AC wins 1st in league play
The Arlington High School boys’ hockey team improved to 8-2-1 in the Middlesex League and 9-4-1 overall, as it beat Reading, 4-1, Saturday, Feb. 4, rebounding from a loss to Burlington.
The Arlington Catholic boys won their first in the Catholic Central League, topping Archbishop Williams, 6-3. AC is 1-5-4 in the league and 3-5-6 overall.
Minuteman lost to Hamilton-Wenham, 5-1.
The Arlington-Reading girls’ score was not yet reported.
Burlington stops Ponder boys short
Fresh off its touting to be a Super 8 team, Arlington High boys’ hockey skated smack into Burlington on Wednesday, Jan. 31, and lost, 4-1.
The Ponder girls’ team beat the Red Devils, 9-2.
The Globe reported thatThe Globe reported that Burlington boys entered the game at Ed Burns Arena “on a roll” against Middlesex League opponents. A 19-save evening by senior goalie Paul Barbieri kept it going, with the team’s fourth straight league win.
Burlington coach Bob Conceison told the newspaper he thought it was the team’s best overall game of the year.
The Red Devils (13-2 overall and 9-0 in the league), ranked seventh in The Globe top 20, came out fast against the No. 8 Spy Ponders (8-4-1, 7-1-1), holding a 3-0 lead by intermission.
Burlington junior forward Joe Barbieri crowded the crease on the power play and deflected a shot from senior forward Sean Casey for a 4-0 Red Devils advantage at 12:07.
Sophomore forward Anthony Messuri broke through on a power-play tally with one minute left in the period to put the Spy Ponders on the board.
In another girls’ hockey game Jan. 31, winless Arlington Catholic lost to Austin Prep, 13-0.
Coaches include Ponder boys in Super 8 ‘watch list’
Let’s look ahead to the Super 8. The state hockey coaches association released its first “watch list” for the tournament to begin at the end of February, BostonGlobe.com reported.
Defending champion Arlington (8-3-1 overall) made the cut, along with, in alphabetical order: Andover (6-3-2), Austin Prep (10-4-1), BC High (9-3-1), Burlington (12-2-0), Catholic Memorial (5-7-2), Central Catholic (14-0-0), Franklin (10-1-3), Hingham (6-3-4), Malden Catholic (4-6-2), Natick (9-3-2), Newburyport (8-1-5), Pope Francis (11-1-2), St. John’s Shrewsbury (8-3-3), St. John’s Prep (7-3-2), St. Mary’s (8-3-3), Waltham (10-2-2), Wellesley (10-1-3), and Xaverian (6-6-3).
The selection committee it to meet Saturday, Feb. 24, in Franklin, to pick the 12-team field (including the final four for the play-in games).
AHS teams put icing on Wilmington
Both Arlington High School hockey teams crushed Wilmington on Saturday, Jan. 27 — the boys, 10-1, and the girls, 5-5.
The boys are 7-1-1 in the league and 8-3-1 overall; the girls’ league record is 6-3-1 and 6-4-1 overall, BostonGlobe.com reports.
At Burns Arena, Austin Prep, 8-1-0 in the Catholic Central, beat Arlington Catholic, 6-2. AC is 0-4-4 in the league and 2-4-6 overall.
Ponders rack up twin wins
Two Arlington High hockey matches Wednesday, Jan. 24, and two wins, both over Wakefield.
Boys’ hockey improved to 7-3-1 overall with a 5-0 shutout.
The girls’ squads went over .500, at 5-4-1 overall, winning, 5-1.
Minuteman boys shut out Gardner
The Minuteman boys’ hockey team improved to 5-7-1 overall on Monday, Jan. 22, buy shutting out winless Gardner, 9-0.
Alex Lafreniere made 18 saves, but the Wildcats (0-11) fell at home.
