UPDATED, Feb. 9: The Town Election season traditionally launches in Arlington in mid-January, at the Martin Luther King Birthday Observance. It got underway early, on Nov. 20, when Steve Byrne announced he would step down as a selectman.
A week before the resignation took effect, on Dec. 4, Selectmen Chair Joseph Curro Jr. announced he would seek reelection.
Now John V. Hurd, the son of former Selectman Jack Hurd, has taken out nomination papers for one of the two board seats open in April election.
The Arlington attorney wrote Monday, Dec. 18: “Yes, I was excited to pull nomination papers today to run for the Board of Selectmen. As a 32-year Arlington resident, I have had the opportunity to grow up here, attend schools here and now I run my law practice in Arlington Center and live with my wife and two children (2 and 4) on Hillside Ave.
“From a young age, I have always learned the importance of community service and participation in local government. Since I have been a homeowner in town, I was a Town Meeting member in Precincts 14 and 19, and I served on the [Transportation] Advisory Committee for three years.
“I also currently serve on the Board of Directors for the Arlington Food Pantry. As a homeowner, father of two young children and business owner in community, I have a strong interest in the direction of the town. It has always been my intention to run for elected office and with upcoming open seat, this is the perfect opportunity for me to take on a more hands on role to assist in the continued progress of the town that I love that has given me so much.”
School Committee, Assessors
For School Committee, two seats will be on the ballot.
One incumbent, Jeff Thielman, says he will seek reelection. On Tuesday, Dec, 19, he wrote that he would pull papers and have a statement after the holidays.
The other, Cindy Starks, had not responded to a request for comment at the time but later said she was not running.
On the Board of Assessors, the seat of longtime incumbent Kevin Feeley will be on the ballot. He has been asked to comment.
