A stone-cold marketing plan

A sign of spring on Washington Street, where I live: a plastic bag in my driveway containing two white stones and a light-blue flier advertising “YARD WORKERS.”

I was not alone. I saw the same package in my neighbors’ driveways. I saw the same last year.

I have two responses. Hear me out:

— This is littering, and I ask the person named on the flier, “Mr. Pham,” to stop what seems to be an annual practice; and

— I am providing free advertising for your services in this column to encourage you to stop.

Your advertising? My wife did not appreciate it either. She took a step beyond complaining only to me: She called you at the number on the flier, 781-642-7815, and let you know.

You said you were sorry.

Sorry is good. Making this the last season you advertise this way is better.

Like lots of us, Mr. Pham, you are just trying to make a buck. The flier says you will make a customer’s “house more beautiful with a beautiful yard ….” You do this with a “professional Oriental gardener.”

You deal with trees, tree stumps, shrubs. You do lawn care and carpentry and concrete work.

You offer free estimates.

“We guarantee our work to your satisfaction,” the flier says.

All may well be true, but introducing your services this way is not a good first step.

If I want a “rock concert,” I’ll check out the Stones on my own.

Leave those nice white pebbles on the beach where you may have found them.
