UPDATED, Jan. 5: The Arlington Catholic boys’ hockey team improved to 2-0-1 in the Catholic Central (Large) with a 5-1 win over Matignon on Monday, Jan. 4.
The AC boys’ indoor track team is now 3-0 after besting Archbishop Williams, 86-68.
Boys’ basketball: AHS edges out a win
The Arlington High School boys’ basketball team improved to 5-1, as junior Colin McNamara scored 27 points in a win over Somerville, 61-58, at Arlington.
Also on Sunday, Jan. 3, the Arlington Catholic boys’ basketball team fell to 2-2, as Lynnfield prevailed, 55-44.
Hockey: AC girls, AHS boys, girls remain undefeated
The second-ranked Arlington Catholic girls’ hockey team boosted its undefeated string to five, besting Archbishop Williams, 3-0. Seniors Eileen Flynn (two goals) and Juliana Dolan (one) powered the Cougars. Goaltender Jaz Mucci posted a shutout.
In other action Saturday, Jan. 2, the Arlington High boys’ hockey squad also improved to 5-0, with 7-1 win over Belmont.
Also among the undefeated hockey teams are the AHS girls, at 4-0, which beat Belmont, 3-1.
Goals were scored by Erin O’Brien, with assists by Laura Shea and Ysa Campbell Breen; Erica Siegel, assisted by Kasey Smith and Maggie Kelly; and O’Brien again, assisted by Kelly and Katie OBrien.
AHS wrestlers (2-3) split two matches — topping Chelmsford, 57- 21 and dropping one to Shawsheen 51-27.
AHS basketball: Boys roll, girls stopped
On Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015, the Arlington High School boys’ basketball team won and the girls lost.
At Arlington, junior guard Colin McNamara led the Spy Ponders (4-1) with 13 points, and senior guard Daniel Slebodnick added 12, as the team ran over Medford, 67-36.
At Cambridge, the AHS girls dropped their third straight, 70-47, to fall to 2-4.
For Cambridge, senior guard Yuleska Ramirez poured in 33 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Falcons (3-1), while Khalila Hall, a junior guard, scored 17 and had eight rebounds.
Girls’ hockey: Arlington Catholic remains undefeated
In an early season matchup between the Cougars, the Boston Herald reports, No. 2 in Division 1 beat No. 1 in Division 2.
Jasmine Mucci got the shutout, and from four AC players scored, beating Notre Dame (Hingham), 4-0, in a showdown of top girls hockey teams Tuesday, Dec. 29, at the Rockland Ice Rink.
Maddy Crowley-Cahill, Erin Healy, Erin Kelley and Bridget Crane each scored to support Mucci’s second shutout of the season for Arlington Catholic, which is 4-0-0 overall and has outscored its opponents by a combined 10-2 so far. AC was ranked second in Div. 1 in the preseason.
AC girls’ basketball, boys’ track win
The Arlington Catholic girls’ basketball team improved to 2-1 on Tuesday, Dec. 29, beating Chelmsford, 55-43.
The AC boys’ indoor track squad is 2-0 after overwhelming Marian, 98-36.
The Arlington High boys’ indoor track squad fell to 1-1, as Reading prevailed, 51-34.
The AHS girls’ indoor track team is 0-3 following Reading’s win, 49-37.
In coed swimming in the Catholic Central League, Cardinal Spellman topped Arlington Catholic, 89-76.
Hockey: AHS boys, AC girls undefeated
In boys’ hockey on Saturday, Dec. 26, Arlington crushed Medford, 8-1, as junior John Pigott led the way for the Spy Ponders (4-0) with two goals and two assists. The team had beaten Wakefield, 7-0, on Wednesday, Dec. 23.
The Arlington Catholic girls’ hockey team, ranked No. 2, in a Globe preview, has skated to a 3-0 start this winter after a 1-0 win over Andover Dec. 19. Top-ranked Austin Prep iced Andover, 5-0, four days later.

On the Arlington side, the AHS boys’ basketball squad, ranked No. 14 by the Globe following a championship season and the loss of five starters, is 4-1 after edging Belmont, 60-58, Dec. 23. Junior guard Colin McNamara, an early season standout, scored 17 points and hit the winning bucket with 1.2 seconds left for the Spy Ponders.
AC hoops beats Fenwick
On Tuesday, Dec. 22, both AC basketball teams topped Bishop Fenwick. The girls improved to 2-1, with 49-37 win, as senior captain Marie Gaffney led the Cougars with 19 points and seven assists. Senior captain Demi Fogarty added 10 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks.
Globe West on Sunday, Dec. 20, listed five high school girls’ basketball teams to watch this season, and among them was Arlington Catholic (18-6 last season). It reports that “the Cougars, who advanced to the Division 2 North semifinals last season before losing to Pentucket Regional, return Catholic Central all-stars Fogarty and Gaffney.”
The AC boys won, 52-38, as senior guard Mike Maher poured in 21 points.
AHS wrestlers, coming off a top season, won their first match of this winter, 50-22, over Catholic Memorial. The Ponders are 1-2.
AHS girls basketball wins in OT
Arlington High the girls’ basketball team dropped one to Belmont, 48-31, on Dec. 23, as senior Samari Winklaar scored 19 for the Marauders.
The girls are now 2-2 in Middlesex (Liberty), but had won a thrilling, come-from behind game, 43-41, Monday, Dec. 21, at Wakefield, then their second straight win.
Coach Amanda Mortelette provided some details: “The girls played with grit and never gave up!
“We were down 5 with a few minutes to play. Grace Caulo played phenomenal defense down the stretch. Rosalie Flinn and Margaret Ammondson also hit big shots late in the game.
“Mallory DeFeo hit an inside shot to tie the game with about 40 seconds left. We got a good stop and a good luck to win the game.
“In overtime, DeFeo came up big again with hustle plays, a putback and 2 free throws.”
DeFeo, Flinn and Ammondson each had 11 points.
