Verse and Vodka Theater’s first show of its season is an updated take on George Washington’s favorite comedy, “The Rivals” by Richard Brinsley Sheridan.
The play will be presented at the Arlington Elks Lodge on Friday, Oct. 9; Saturday, Oct. 10; and Friday, Oct. 16, at 8 p.m.
This is Verse and Vodka’s third season presenting plays at the Elks Lodge, 56 Pond Lane, beside Spy Pond.
“We were supposed to do a one-shot performance of a play back in 2013,” said Kathryn Gandek-Tighe, co-director of Verse and Vodka. “We had no idea that people would be so excited to come see classic plays in the Elks function room with the bar open throughout the whole show. People asked us to do more, so here we are opening our third season.
“To say we are surprised would be an understatement.”
Plays are presented partially staged, which means the actors still have the scripts in their hands.
The audience sits at tables with buckets of kettle corn and can get up for more drinks.
“You might risk being included in the action when you get a drink, but you also risk that sitting in your seat. Our audience is in the ‘splash zone’ just like at Sea World,” said Clark Wright, the other co-director. “Our actors interact with the audience and pull them into the play, sometimes literally.”
The house and the bar open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8.
Audience members are welcome to bring their dinner. Tables will be reserved for parties of eight or larger.
Tickets can be purchased online at Brown Paper Tickets or at the door if they are available.
Ticket prices are “pay-what-you-can,” with a suggested price of $10.
