UPDATED, Feb. 21: The Arlington High School boys’ basketball team finished the season at 21-1 with a nonleague win over Medford (5-12), 61-52, on Friday, Feb. 20. Leading the Spy Ponders with 18 each were Josh Lee and Miles Robinson.
The AHS boys’ hockey team (14-3-3) played a strong Burlington squad (15-1-3) to a 2-2 tie.
The Arlington Catholic girls’ basketball team (16-5) beat Brockton (12-7), 55-48, on Feb. 20.
AC girls’ hockey skates past Duxbury
In a rematch of last year’s Division 1 state final, the top-ranked Arlington Catholic girls’ hockey team (16-2-1) edged Duxbury (12-4-2), 2-1, in Hingham on Thursday, Feb. 19.
Touted as a playoff matchup, AC got some satisfaction as Duxbury had won last year’s game with back-to-back goals in the third en route to its fourth consecutive title.
The AC girls’ basketball team also won, beating Cardinal Spellman 56-40, on Feb. 19. Sophomore forward Lena Perez led the No. 14 Cougars (16-5) with 16 points and 15 rebounds.
AC boys’ basketball, AHS boys’ hockey win
The Arlington Catholic boys’ basketball team got back on the winning track in nonleague play Wednesday, Feb. 18, following a heartbreaking loss, crushing Chelsea, 72-44.
Also in a nonleague contest Feb. 18, the Arlington High boys’ hockey squad (14-3-3) edged Weymouth, 2-1.
In the Globe girls’ basketball top 20, Arlington Catholic dropped to No. 14 following a 60-52 loss to Bishop Feehan on Feb. 14.
AC girls’ hockey team beats Reading; AHS boys win Burns
The top-ranked Arlington Catholic girls’ hockey team (15-2-1) prevailed over a tough Reading squad (16-2), 3-2, in the Hingham Showcase on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
The Arlington High boys’ hockey team (13-3-3) topped Winthrop, 6-3, as Justin Nee (two goals, two assists) helped the No. 20 Spy Ponders win the Ed Burns Classic on Feb. 17.
Coming off their upset of then-undefeated Arlington, the AC boys’ basketball team (13-5) dropped a heartbreaker to Cathedral, 54-53, as sophomore Trevor Lynch hit the winning 3-pointer for the Panthers (11-6) as time expired.
Two hockey games to watch listed in the Feb. 18 Globe are:
— Arlington boys at Weymouth, Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 8 p.m. at Connell Memorial Rink, an evenly matched game between two teams near the top of their respective divisions. “Weymouth has flown under the radar for much of the season, but should be a worthy opponent for 20th-ranked Arlington,” the report says.
— Arlington Catholic girls at Duxbury, Thursday, Feb. 19, at noon, at Pilgrim Skating Rink, Hingham, a rematch last year of the Division 1 state final, which Duxbury won with back-to-back goals in the third en route to their fourth consecutive title. “This could very well be a playoff matchup,” the report says.
Town rival stops AHS boys’ streak
One part of Arlington feels joy, another sadness, as the Arlington Catholic boys’ basketball team stopped the Spy Ponders with their first loss.
The Cougars (13-4) beat sixth-ranked AHS (20-1 overall), 64-58, on Monday, Feb. 16, as senior Nick Carvello scored 14 points. Globe summary >>
In the second round of the Comcast Tournament, the AC girls’ basketball team (14-5) lost to Lincoln-Sudbury 52-32. Senior center Olivia Canning collected 11 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks as the Warriors (12-7) upset the eighth-ranked Cougars.
With a 5-0 win over Austin Prep, the Arlington Catholic girls’ hockey team (14-2-1) stays on top of this week’s Globe rankings. The matchup against Reading on Tuesday, Feb. 17, is expected to decide whether AC stays No. 1 for the season’s final rankings.
The Arlington High boys’ hockey team (12-3-3) beat Marshfield, 4-1, on Feb. 16.
AHS boys’ basketball streak at 20; AC girls’ hockey takes title
The Arlington High School boys’ basketball team is unbeaten after 20 games, not 19, as YourArlington reported.
On Senior Night, Thursday, Feb. 12, the team beat Woburn, 59-48, in a game that had been rescheduled because of snow and was not included in a won-loss on BostonGlobe.com. That was its 19th straight win.
Providing the additional score was an AHS parents whose son plays on the team.
The Spy Ponder boys’ basketball team continued its unprecedented unbeaten run, improving to 20-0 on Friday, Feb. 13, with a 63-44 win over Lexington (3-18). Josh Lee netted 18 points on six three-pointers. The bpys’ game against Medford set for Saturday, Feb. 14, was postponed because of snow.
The top-ranked Arlington Catholic girls’ hockey team claimed the Catholic Central League title over No. 5 Austin Prep (11-3-2, 3-2-1) improved to 15-2-1 on Feb. 14 with another shutout, 5-0. Senior Adrieana Rossini scored a hat trick for the Cougars (15-2-1 and 5-0-1 in the league) Senior Katherine Crane stopped 15 shots.
In the first round of the Arbella/Comcast Tournament, the AC girls’ basketball team dropped to 14-3 with a 60-52 loss to Bishop Feehan. The Shamrocks (19-1) held off the Cougars with clutch free-throw shooting. Maddie Jolin had 13 points but fouled out with 3:42 to play.
The No. 20 Spy Ponder boys’ hockey team upped its record 12-3-2, shutting out Lexington, 5-0, Feb. 13.
The Arlington High girls’ basketball team fell to 11-8 after a loss to Lexington (12-5) 51-47. Senior guard Meredith Bernstein led the Minutemen (13-7) with 16 points.
A top-ranked Austin Prep hockey squad (15-1) edged the Arlington Catholic boys (10-6-2), 4-3.
AHS boys’ hockey team outshoot Triton in Burns final
The Arlington High School boys’ hockey team won the final of the Ed Burns Classic in Arlington on Thursday, Feb. 12, outscoring Triton, 2-0, in a shootout. The final score was 3-2. The Spy Ponders are 11-3-2 in league play.
The AHS girls’ basketball team (11-6) lost a squeaker to a tough Woburn team, 53-51, on Feb. 12, as senior power forward Sam D’Angelo led the No. 19 Tanners with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The Feb. 13 Globe is highlighting the girls’ basketball game, matching No. 2 Bishop Feehan and No. 8 Arlington Catholic, Saturday, Feb. 14, at 6:30 p.m. An undefeated Feehan lineup will face one of its few tests this season when the Shamrocks take on Arlington Catholic in the Arbella/Comcast Classic at Woburn.

AHS boys’ basketball team wins 18th straight
The Arlington School boys’ basketball team extended its unbeaten streak to 18, topping crosstown rival Arlington Catholic, 64-49, on Wednesday, Feb. 11. The sixth-ranked Spy Ponders got a complete effort by senior forward Miles Robinson (24 points, 15 rebounds, 7 assists).
The Arlington Catholic girls’ basketball team (13-3 in its league) edged Arlington (11-5 in its league), 43-37, on Feb. 11, as senior guard Melissa Rogers scored 15 points for the Cougars (box score below).
After defeating Brockton, 52-45, Sunday, Arlington Catholic girls saw their four-game winning streak end with a loss to Archbishop Williams on Feb. 6. Brockton fell to No. 8 and Arlington Catholic No. 9 in Globe rankings.
In hockey, the top-ranked AC girls’ squad (13-2-1) scored a 4-1 win over Archbishop Williams.

Arlington Catholic, Reading, Acton-Boxboro and Duxbury are getting ready for the state tournament. Key matchups include Reading and AC at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17. Arlington Catholic won 1-0 in its first matchup, but a win by Reading could dethrone the Lady Cougars from the top spot in the Globe’s rankings.
Duxbury and Arlington Catholic, which face off Thursday, Feb. 19, at noon, played a close contest in last year’s final.
Next up: Austin Prep at Arlington Catholic, Saturday, Feb. 14, at 6 p.m., at the Arlington Sports Center. This Valentine’s Day tilt could see a Central Catholic League Champion.
