The boy was talkative, asking questions. One included the word “strangle.”
The man had no answers.
The boy glanced at the community-contributed dedication, but what caught his eye were the fake $10,000 bills. They were strewn on walk, the grass, the street.
They may have been part of the tribute or had just blown there, but that seemed unlikely.
“One 10,000,” he said. “Two 10,000. Three 10,000.”
And on and on as he walked down Newland.
Others came by — a man with two youngsters, a woman smoking a cigarette and walking her dog, a woman with young girl. None glanced toward 45 Newland.
Quiet — except for this: Outside the second-floor apartment at 45 Newland, wind chimes offered a mother’s soft laugh to her children.
Those in the news trucks continued to wait, as we all do for some of this to make sense.
