The race for two seats on the Board of Selectmen took on fresh dimensions Monday, Jan. 10, as Jack Hurd announced he will resign his seat, and Annie LaCourt said she will not seek reelection, aiming to fill the remaining year of Hurd’s term. Hurd has taken out papers for town clerk.
Incumbent Diane M. Mahon of 23 Howard St. took out nomination papers on Monday, Jan. 3. In December, Maria A. Romano, an Arlington businesswoman and a previous candidate, and Dan Dunn, a former Finance Committee member, have taken out papers.
LaCourt told the Arlington e-mail list Jan. 11 that she would not be appointed.
“I believe that my colleagues will choose to add the remainder of Jack’s term to the April ballot and I will run for the seat. I would not be comfortable with an appointment when putting it on the ballot is possible,” she wrote.
YourArlington initially reported LaCourt would seek an appointment.
She told the board Jan. 10 that she had found the last five years “very intense” and indicated that serving the last year of Hurd’s term would likely be the extent of her selectmen’s service.
Hurd, who has served on the board since 1997, announced that he intends to submit a letter of resignation to the Board of Selectmen before the Jan. 24 meeting. The letter will have an effective date on or before April 1, 2011.
“My irreversible resignation once I submit it will give the remaining selectmen the option of placing my unfinished term (1-year) on the April 2, 2011, ballot,” he wrote in an e-mail Jan. 11.
Also vying for the clerk’s position are Assistant Town Clerk Stephanie Lucarelli and Sheri Baron. Lucarelli and Hurd ran last year after Corinne Rainville said she would resign. In a 301 vote, selectman named Hurd to the post, but he withdrew after Rainville rescinded her resignation.
Residents who are interested in running for office must return nomination papers by Feb. 14 for the April 2 election.
