Joseph S. Daly, Housing Authority candidateDaly

The Arlington Housing Authority (AHA) Board of Commissioners has elected a tenant as its chairman, the first time since its founding nearly 72 years ago.

Joseph Daly, a lifelong Arlington resident who is seeking reelection to the board in June 6 election, is a 1951 Arlington High Graduate, AHS Hall of Famer, former state representative and tenant at Drake Village.

In a May 27 news release from John Griffin, AHA executive director, said the elevation of Daly occurred at its May 27 annual meeting. The AHA was founded Aug. 28, 1948.

"Joe has dedicated his life to his country, community and public housing," the release says. "At the start of the Korean war, Joe enlisted in the Army. Following basic training, he was chosen to serve as a member of the Presidents Honor Guard, stationed at Arlington National Cemetery.

"Joe stood guard to protect and in respect for one of our nation’s most precious and solemn burial sites, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Following his discharge, Joe spent 30 years working for the Department of Veterans Services in Boston and the Cambridge Housing Authority.

"In 1973, he was elected Arlington’s state representative to the state Legislature. Following that, Daly also served more than 30 years as an elected Town Meeting representative and the director for veterans services in Arlington.

Joe and his wife, Jan, have been married for 67 years. They are the parents of four children and have seven grandchildren. At Drake Village, Daly is a past president of the tenant association. He has served for many years as a member of the AHA board.

"The entire board are proud of Joe’s contributions to his community and fellow tenants and are honored to see him serve as the board chairman," the release says.

Daly, 88,  is seeking reelection to a second five-year term on the board. Opposing him is Jo Anne Preston.
