Restoration work at Jefferson Cutter House continues

UPDATED, July 7: A $65,000 grant from the Massachusetts Historic Commission is helping Arlington's Department of Planning & Community Development and Cyrus Dallin Art Museum to restore the exterior of the Jefferson Cutter House at 611 Mass. Ave.

Work on the Jefferson Cutter House exterior renovation project started on March 28, and was expected to be finished by June 30, barring any unexpected delays or circumstances, Ted Fields, economic-development planner, wrote April 21. As of July 7, the work continued, but is expected to be done soon.

Set amid Whittemore Park in Arlington Center, this historic property houses the Dallin museum, Chamber of Commerce and the Cutter Gallery.

The Aulson Co., noted preservation contractors, is restoring windows, installing a new shingle roof, repairing deteriorated clapboards and sills, repairing damaged gutters and repointing parts of the stone foundation.

The town's Community Development Block Grant program is also providing funding for this project.

Arlington's master plan, adopted in 2015, calls for protecting the town's historic legacy by putting into effect such restoration work as the Cutter House project.

This announcement was published Thursday, April 21, 2016, and updated July 7.
