To commemorate its 100th anniversary, Arlington BSA Scouts Troop 306 recently installed and dedicated a handcrafted picnic table to Magnolia Park (at left).
Weighing more than 600 pounds and spanning 12 feet, the table is crafted from a Dawn Redwood that was removed by the own as part of the Magnolia Park renovation and expansion of the community garden in 2017.
The idea for the table stemmed from a Troop 306 Eagle Scout project discussion with the Parks and Recreation Department about possible project ideas.
The felled tree was milled into boards and planks onsite at Magnolia Park in April 2017. The wood has been drying until recently, when it was planed down to usable lumber and cut and assembled into a custom table for the park. The table includes the following dedication plaque:

“The scouts are always looking for ways to contribute to the community and this project is just one example,” remarked Dennis Hickey, the troop’s committee chair. “In addition to projects like this, the troop regularly performs conservation projects and supports local food-rescue and -distribution nonprofits, such as Arlington EATS and Food Link.
"Over the past 12 months alone, Troop 306 has performed Eagle Scout conservation projects at Turkey Hill, Belmont Habitat, Mt. Gilboa, Cooke’s Hollow, Menotomy Rocks Park and McClennen Park."
Founded in 1917, BSA Scouts Troop 306 is a very active, scout-led troop with emphasis on outdoor adventure, community service, leadership training and skills building. The troop welcomes boys and girls in grades six through 12.
The group’s program is currently delivered primarily outdoors with weekly outdoor meetings and monthly camping trips all year long.
Until Dec. 13, the troop is sponsoring its ninth annual holiday gift drive to benefit local teens in need served by the Department of Children and Families. Residents can donate via the program’s Amazon wish list at here >>
All items purchased online will be shipped directly to the troop’s community-service chair.
