Tuesday, July 28

8:08 a.m. Accident. Officers responded to a report on Mass. Avenue of an accident with airbag deployment. When they arrived on scene, officers found a green Honda Elantra facing northbound with damage to the front left side of the car. Behind the Honda was a White Chevy Trailblazer with front-end damage. The 2 male parties of both vehicles were met on the sidewalk. The operator of the Honda stated he was exiting the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot when he attempted to turn left onto Mass. Avenue, but was struck by the Trailblazer. The operator of the Trailblazer stated he was traveling east on Mass. Ave. when the Honda attempted to pass his lane, but he did not have time to stop. Based on the damage to the cars, officers determined the Elantra was making a U-turn to get into Dunkin Donuts. He received a citation for failure to use caution while turning, and a tow service was called to the scene. No injuries were reported.

4:06 p.m. Destruction of property. A reporting party spoke with an officer at the front desk regarding damage to her 2019 Honda Fit around six months to a year ago. The reporting party believes the damage was due to a key or sharp object. She stated this incident occurred when her car was parked beside her home on Fremont Street. She decided to park her car in the rear of her home underneath the deck which is accessible through a private alleyway. She noticed there were scrapes under her driver’s side door, front quarter panel, and back passenger side quarter panel. She had no idea who would do this since she has no problems with anyone in the area. She was provided with a report number for insurance purposes.

6:02 a.m. Customer Problem. An employee at the Starbucks on Mass. Avenue reported a problem involving a customer making her feel uncomfortable. She informed officers that about a month ago, there was a frequent male customer described as a 5′ 7″ man in his mid-to-late 50s. The customer asked her to come over, and while she found it slightly uncomfortable, she walked over, at which point he stated he had a crush on her. Officers advised she had to talk to her manager about the matter. A week ago, the man was standing outside of the Starbucks window when she was cleaning. He was trying to get her to come outside, but she ignored him. Officers then spoke to the store manager and advised her to contact the customer, but they were unable to. Officers told the employees that they should contact the police department if that party returned so he could be given a no-trespass warning.

8:32 p.m. Tree down. A large branch from a town tree near 25 Fairview Ave. was had fallen across the road. The reporting party stated he was startled from the noise but there were no injuries. He contacted the DPW tree board several times because of concern that the tree was going to fall into the home. When officers arrived, they discovered a hollow tree trunk with easily broken pieces of wood had fallen onto the property fence. The branch caused damage to two panels and the wood fence. The fire department stated the house was safe to go back into since the tree was not resting directly onto it and the party was given a report number.

Thursday, July 30

12:11 a.m. Accident. A reporting party on Newport Street spoke to officers regarding a hit-and-run that caused front-end damage to her white Mazda. She stated she was parked on Newport to pick up her daughter from her friend’s house when she discovered her vehicle had been struck by another vehicle. She informed officers that the incident likely occurred between 9 and 11 p.m. The Mazda had significant damage to the front end, driver’s side headlight, and rear-view mirror. There appeared to be a red paint transfer indicating the color of the suspected vehicle. When officers attempted to observe Ring camera footage from a residence nearby, they were not able to make contact with the homeowners at the time. The reporting party left her vehicle at the location, and the matter is under investigation.

8:02 a.m. Fire. Officers were dispatched to Alewife Greenway across from 113 Sunnyside Ave. for a report of an outside fire. When they arrived on scene, they observed a small fire on the water side of the Greenway bike path. The fire was based in a pile of wood and branches, which is believed to be constructed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation to prevent potential flooding. Arlington Fire extinguished the fire with a water extinguisher.
