Johnathan Nascimento is the new head coach for the Arlington High School Spy Ponders. Although new to this role, Nascimento isn’t completely new to the program. He formerly was the team’s defensive coordinator.
“When the job opened up I had the benefit of being on the previous staff,” Nascimento said. “I’ve already worked with a lot of the kids here so I knew it would be a smooth transition.”
Having a new face leading the Spy Ponders’ football program isn’t the only point of transition the team will be facing this upcoming fall. Rather, Nascimento is also looking forward to making adjustments that come with players stepping into new roles.
Last season, the Spy Ponders ended the season with a 7-4 record. This marks their best since 2014. While an impressive end to their season, much of it had to do with seniors who have moved on from the program. Since the end of last season, Nascimento has to work around the main challenge of losing fourteen seniors in just one offseason.
“Losing a senior class like that is tough, that class was a special group.” Nascimento said. The recently-named head coach will need to rely on not just new playing styles, but new leadership from athletes stepping into these new roles. Much of that reliance rests on the team’s character.
“I can’t stress enough the character of this team,” Nascimento said. “We have met a few times already and it’s like they haven’t missed a beat. We plan on using this as our identity and we are excited to get the ball rolling this fall.” Not to mention, the team is well-supported by the Arlington community through the town and the school administration. This kind of support is essential for a team that needs this time to readjust in order to continue the success of last season.
Nascimento also is really relying on the maturity of this group of athletes for the upcoming season. This is a group that can hold themselves accountable and to the standard that was set by the team last season. Now that these students have seen they are able to get to that level, there’s no going back.
“I already have a group of athletes that are very prepared for the season ahead.” Nascimento said. He also noted that he never would have expected a group of teammates like this, where he doesn’t feel as though he has to build from the ground up, despite this being a new adjustment. There seems to be no doubt in Nascimento’s mind to hold high hopes for the season ahead.
With continued success, this would be the first time since the 2014-2015 that Arlington High School Football had consecutive winning seasons. While there is plenty of time until even mentioning final season records into the conversation, Nascimento will continue to rebuild off of the Spy Ponders’ last successful season.
