The following is based on selected Arlington Police Department logs from June 9 through June 15. Excerpts from the Arlington Police Department log:
Tuesday, June 9
2:05 p.m. Accident. A Thompson Elementary School bus with 44 students was involved in a motor vehicle crash on Grafton Street at Raleigh Street. The operator of vehicle one, the school bus, stated he was traveling north on Grafton when he passed Raleigh another vehicle struck the passenger side of the bus. The driver of the second vehicle said that she was travelling on Raleigh but did not see the stop sign before striking the bus with the kids inside. No one was injured at the scene of the accident. A tow service was called and a school teacher escorted the 44 students back to school on foot. The operator of vehicle two was issued a citation for failing to stop. After the students returned to school, the fire department went to make sure all the kids were okay.
Wednesday, June 10
12:04 p.m. Animal confined in extreme heat. Arlington Police Department responded to a report of an animal in a locked car on Summer Street. They found a moderately long-haired Australian shepherd panting on the the rear passenger side floor of a gray 2021 Honda with the windows slightly cracked. Officers were able to slip a hand in the window and discovered the air felt hot and thick. After running the vehicle plate, they tried numerous times to make contact with the vehicle owner, but were unsuccessful. They unlocked the car and successfully recovered the dog. They dog was panting but in good health after they gave him water and some treats. They took the internal temperature of the car and discovered it was 99 degrees while the outside temperature was 86. Not long after, the owner of the vehicle come out of the nearby soccer field area and claimed the dog belonged to her. She was advised that she should not leave the dog in the car because it was illegal to leave a child or pet in the car. Pictures were taken and the animal control officer will be following up on the matter.
Thursday, June 11
1:15 p.m. Crash. A man operating vehicle one was travelling west at Chesnut and Medford streets when an operator of vehicle two was turning left from Medford crashed into him. There was minor damage to his vehicle. The operator of vehicle one stated the vehicle operator two failed to stop, which is why he decided to follow her to get her attention to pull over. The operator of vehicle one stated she was driving on the Chestnut and Medford area when she noticed he was following her for about a mile before she pulled over in a parking lot near Mass Ave. She stated she never hit his vehicle, but when she pulled over, boxed her car in the parking lot and started yelling about a crash. She was confused at this accusation. She stated the damage on her motor vehicle was from an older incident. She made a separate report to the department and her insurance company. Neither party sustained any injuries.
Saturday, June 13
13:37 p.m. Accident. Officers at Pleasant and Brunswick Street found a vehicle one in the left outbound lane and a second vehicle across the outbound lane with its front end against the passenger side of the first vehicle. The operator of vehicle one stated she was driving outbound on Pleasant when vehicle two pulled out of Brunswick and struck her. After the accident she was complaining of leg pain so Arlington Fire transported her to a local hospital. The front seat passenger of vehicle one’s statement was similar to the operator’s but the rear passenger was unable to give a statement because of memory loss issues. The operator of vehicle two stated he was travelling down Brunswick when he stopped at a stop sign and saw the vehicle in the lane closest to him waved him out. Unfortunately, he did not realize there were two lanes, which is why he struck vehicle one. He was issued a citation for failing to yield. A tow truck came to the scene and took possession of both vehicles.
Sunday, June 14
10:26 p.m. Tree Down. A tree had fallen and blocked the roadway on Park Place, disrupting two homeowners. Homeowners of a residence on Park Place were inside their home when they heard a loud bang. They rushed outside to see a tree from across the street had fallen onto the vehicle in front of their home. There were branches on top of the vehicle and since the tree was not owned by them, the tree department was contacted for an emergency removal. A few stones on the residents’ stone wall were also damaged but there was no major damage to the vehicle, or the home, besides a few scratches. The tree department worked for a while at the scene.
Monday, June 15
1:53 p.m. Accident. A FedEx driver pointed officers to a motor vehicle on the side of the road with a female sobbing standing behind it. They asked if she was involved in a crash, which she nodded yes in response to. She stated she was travelling south on Everett Street when she believes she stopped at a stop sign on and turned right on Mass. Avenue. She is not sure if she hit the oncoming vehicle or if they hit her. She was too distraught to describe the motor vehicle or the male operator. She stated the male got out to inspect his and her vehicle. Her front bumper was hanging off but he was unable to reattach it. He gave her his drivers license and his mother’s phone number since she was the owner of the vehicle. He advised her to call his mother later that night when she was done with work. He did not provide his information. Officers advised her to inform them if she received any additional information from the mother.
