To the Editor: In order to achieve Arlington’s goal of having “Net 0” greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, every resident’s contribution matters. Our goal is to encourage sustainable energy use in Arlington, with a focus on solar panels and electric vehicles. Both options significantly reduce your greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs.
Electric vehicles have many substantial environmental benefits because they do not produce tailpipe emissions. They are cheaper to fuel and maintain, benefit both the community and the environment, and can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving local air quality. However, we have noticed that there are very few public charging stations in Arlington.
Our goal is to increase the availability of free public charging stations around Arlington so that they are more accessible to electric vehicle owners. In addition, since there will be no need for gas or oil, money will be saved. Many drivers also find electric vehicles easier to drive and more efficient than gas-powered vehicles. Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly energy-efficient, too. Numerous drivers only need to charge their vehicles about once a week, depending on how much they drive. All in all, electric vehicles can be a great addition to your support for clean energy.
Solar panels are both convenient and good for the environment. Solar panels can work almost anywhere, even in New England’s unstable weather conditions. However, if the location does not provide enough sunlight every day, installing an energy storage system ensures you will have adequate energy whenever you need it. Instead of unused energy from solar panels being sent back to the power grid, the extra energy can be saved and used later when not enough energy is being produced in the day.
Solar panels can also do more than just turn on the lights in your home; they can also heat up water. Solar hot water can be cheaper than other alternatives, such as gas or oil, and makes a minimal carbon footprint. In addition, solar hot water heaters can be paired with any backup water-heating source. Even though solar panels with all these benefits may seem expensive, there are many other factors to consider. For one, solar panels are not subject to any inflation, and many incentives are available.
For example, for installing solar panels or an energy storage system, you can get a 30% tax credit. Solar panels have also been proven to pay for themselves in 5 to 10 years and last 20 to 30 years, providing at least 10 years of free energy. Overall, solar panels can be a worthwhile investment for both you and the environment.
Despite these benefits shown, none of them will take effect unless you step in. This can be by installing solar panels on your home, buying an electric vehicle, biking instead of driving, or signing petitions and supporting the cause for clean energy in Arlington. By supporting this cause, you will be ensuring the environment for future generations and improving both your quality of life and that of your local environment.
