Class recognizes Nina Carbini, who died last year, as fellow graduate

Under clear skies and before a packed house, more than 400 members of the Arlington High School Class of 2026 graduated on Saturday, June 6, 2026.

“As one of the most creative and diverse classes that has ever graduated from Arlington High, you were accepted to 325 different universities and you will be scattering to 138 of them in the next few months,” Arlington School Superintendent Liz Homan said in her remarks. “…Your class will be remembered for your diverse academic accomplishments because of your brilliance – and because of the teachers, family members, peers, and Arlington voters who poured their efforts into knocking down opportunity barriers for you.”

“Graduation offers us a moment to pause and reflect. Think of a person, an event, or an activity that made you feel truly happy. Think of a moment when you felt that you belonged,” Arlington High School Principal Matthew Janger opened the event with a welcome. “Those relationships are what we pursue. I would argue that one of the most revolutionary acts available to us today is to connect with other people and to understand ourselves. The pursuit of happiness begins there.”

School Committee Chair Laura Gitelson gave remarks and seniors Karyne Maressa Borges and Indigo Blankspoor also gave addresses.

As part of his welcome, Janger recognized Nina Carbini, a classmate who died last summer. “Nina was a beloved member of our school community, remembered for her kindness, humor, and warmth. Her bright spirit and the connections she built with peers and staff will be deeply missed and forever cherished. Nina often spoke about how much she appreciated the people at Arlington High School who supported her and made her feel seen, welcomed, and cared for,” Janger said before giving Nina’s diploma to a Carbini family member.

The senior class was celebrated at an awards night on Thursday, June 4.
