In celebration of her new novel, “Little Great Island,” Arlington author Kate Woodworth conversed with Whitney Scharer (“The Age of Light”), also of Arlington, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6.
The conversation took place at Porter Square Books, 1815 Mass. Ave. in Cambridge.
The event was free and open to the public.
Woodworth’s book, “Little Great Island,” is about love, community and climate change on a small Maine island. It has been called “an extraordinary achievement and a pure pleasure to read” by National Book Award winner Ha Jin.
Her first novel, “Racing Into the Dark,” was touted as “Emotionally gripping” by Booklist, and Kirkus Reviews said, “Vivid and honest, dramatic and without pat resolutions: an impressive debut.” Her short stories have appeared in Cimarron Review, Western Humanities Review, Shenandoah and other literary journals.
A retired medical writer in addition to fiction writer, Woodworth has received numerous awards and recognition for her writing, including a Pushcart Prize nomination, multiple Utah Arts Council and Dalton Pen Communication Awards, and an International Association of Business Communicators finalist recognition. She received her MFA from Boston University.
Whitney Scharer is the author of “The Age of Light,” a Boston Globe and IndieNext bestseller that was named one of the best books of 2019 by Parade, Glamour Magazine, Real Simple, Refinery 29, Booklist and Yahoo. Internationally, “The Age of Light” won Le prix Rive Gauche à Paris, was a coups de couer selection from the American Library in Paris, and has been published in over a dozen other countries. Scharer is the recipient of a 2020 Massachusetts Cultural Council Artists Fellowship in Fiction, and has been awarded residencies at the Mount, The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and Ragdale. She grew up in Denver, Colorado and now lives with her husband and daughter in Arlington, where she is at work on her second novel.
