Program background
The scholarship program, a competitive academic competition, awards scholarships of $2,500 each to 2,500 students nationwide yearly. Winners are selected based on a combination of their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, PSAT/NMSQT scores, leadership roles, community contributions and personal essays. To enter this competition, a student must earn a high PSAT score out of 1,520, which is then converted to an index number out of 223. Read explanations here >> and here >>
In Massachusetts, the 2024 index number cutoff was 222.
Furthermore, the corporation says that an estimate of less than 1 percent of students across all PSAT exam takers achieves a national merit scholarship. In 2024, out of 1.3 million entries, only about 7,000 students were named a national merit scholar.
The test-prep company Kaplan says that the program opens doors to numerous opportunities in higher education and beyond. In addition to the financial award, the program seeks to promote academic excellence across the country by honoring and supporting young people who exhibit academic talent. .
