Final plan, recommendations expected
At this third public meeting of the Minuteman Bikeway project, set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, the town’s consultant, Kittelson & Associates, will present the final plan and recommendations as well as answer questions about the plan.
The final plan elements include an overview of bikeway existing conditions; recommendations for policies, maintenance, lighting, safety and other key elements; and an implementation strategy to make improvements.
Last November, a public forum was held to review and make recommendations to improve the Minuteman Bikeway, open since October 1992.
$80K project
The project, funded through the Community Preservation Act Committee, has a budget of $80,000 and the forecast in November was that the project was expected to be completed by May.
The town and Kittelson will work with members of the Arlington Bicycle Advisory Committee (ABAC) to provide guidance on the project and has committed to hold three public meetings as the plan is developed.
This project aligns with the Connect Arlington Sustainable Transportation Plan, endorsed by the Select Board in July. It is called for in the section, “Mobility Options for All Ages, Capabilities, and Incomes,” where Strategy B.3 says: “Complete the Minuteman Bikeway Project and implement recommendations that increase access to and capacity and safety on the pathway.”
Other elements of the project include increasing separation of cyclists and pedestrians to expand capacity and enhance comfort and safety on the bikeway; developing way-finding and user safety programs; analyzing the potential to install lighting to increase visibility and safety along the pathway at night; and improving neighborhood connections to the path.
